I'm not an expert at the Title IX regs but wouldn't you have to field an extra men's team in addition to a women's beach volleyball team if you were going to do that? I'm not saying it's impossible, an athletic department this size has vast resources at its disposal, just saying it might be another hurdle to overcome.

Texas is really making a go at a competitive beach team. They will have dedicated beach players and beach scholarships. Nebraska's beach team is nothing more than a ploy to allow the coaches to train indoor players during the spring and take them to Hawaii every year. Wisconsin is not going to start a beach team for a few reasons: 1. Facilities - We don't have indoor sand courts, nor do we have a place to put them. 2. Mindset - Wisconsin is not going to introduce a new sport unless they're willing/able to field a team/program of the caliber to compete for championships. The facilities aspect seems like a matter of logistics and resources. I’m sure it’s possible to buy/lease indoor sand courts relatively quickly. Maybe they can be temporary. Or maybe that new complex being built for LOVB can have a couple? As for mindset, you have to start somewhere even if you aspire to win championships. I was thinking more along the lines of the Nebraska beach team model, at least to begin with. Anyway I’m pretty sure most of Texas’s beach volleyball team is currently taken from their indoor roster. Moreover I believe all four of PAC teams joining the Big Ten next year have a beach team. Thus it seems like a nucleus of a Big Ten Beach Volleyball Conference is already forming. Why not join in on the fun? And it really would be just for fun for a while —Wisconsin and Nebraska will unfortunately be cupcakes for USC, UCLA, etc for a while, but they’ll learn more quickly that way. Just trying to look at it a different way. I agree we can and should. Just giving you reasons why I've heard it will not happen.

Nah, we'll just have fewer fake women's rowers.

Welcome, Carly Anderson! Checking out some of her highlights, as I've never seen her play. She's quick and has good court vision. Will be a great addition! Side note: Side spin on some of her balls? I know some refs call a double if there's a certain amount of spin.

Are there any indoor sand facilities in the Madison area already? There's a few in the Milwaukee area that have some pretty good run so I'd assume there are some in Madison or close. If they really wanted to, they could use that as a base.

Do you think the B10 refs would call a double on her setting? Obvi this is all hypothetical. I think she's going to be a great addition.

I think she's going to be a great addition. Just watched and didn’t see any that I would have expected to be called a double in the B1G last year. And as tablealgebra refers to, they wont be calling doubles on sets across the ncaa starting next season. There’s information about that in the thread “NCAA Rule Changes!!!”

Anyway I’m pretty sure most of Texas’s beach volleyball team is currently taken from their indoor roster. Currently the Texas beach roster has 10 players and they are all full time beach. I believe all of them are transfers as we didn't hire the Beach HC until late spring (May?) after the 2023 beach season ended so he didn't have a chance to recruit freshman for this year's team. Almost all of the transfers are from Texas and many from the Austin area. Primary motivation for adding beach at this time was Title IX. Women as a % of the student population at Texas has increased significantly in the last few years which increased the # of women athletes needed to be in compliance. Our AD has mentioned that likely we will need to add a total of five women's sports to get back into compliance.

I looked at some Texas beach results from 2023 and saw their indoor team players as the pairs who played. All the more reason to get in on it now, while even Texas is new to it.
