Badgers should pick up Batenhorst just to play the trend…seems all the players to leave Nebraska the past couple years win Championships while all the players that stay don’t…

Not a surprise that Ally Batenhorst in the transfer portal from Nebraska. Unlikely she would come to Wisconsin, but she is an OH with a fair amount of experience. Based on the conversation I had with her dad before the game at Field House this past season, it's completely feasible, dare I say likely, she'd come to Wisconsin. Badgers were on her short list prior to committing to Nebraska and things dad told me would make Badgers very possible.

I just don't understand the clammering for a hitter who hit .189 last year. I saw less excitement on here for Taylor Landfair than this, which is crazy lol. There has only been one page of talk, and it has been pretty muted. Landfair generated way more excitement among a fair fraction of badger fans. Batenhorst has some massive matches, and some pretty terrible ones. Very possible Orzol beats her out because Julia can hit a a slightly higher percentage, she can pass a bit better, and she is key to the teams energy. That said Batenhorst hits pretty well out of system whereas Orzol struggles OOS. In a 5-1 with more DSs available maybe a passing OH makes less of a difference. She would be a good depth. But if she wants beach, there is no point talking about it. I'm not sure Batenhorst ever got close to her full potential at Nebraska. On the other hand, a 6'5" player without a big arm can be a liability. But she can pass reasonably (which was a big concern to some people about Landfair, I think), and while she's not going to be a 6ro player for a team with Final Four aspirations, she still gives a good block against an opposite or a tough blocking matchup for an opposing setter, and has two finals trips as experience. I think if Batenhorst (or someone with similar talent) came to Wisconsin, there's no guarantee she starts - Orzol is a fine OH2 and with two liberos next year, we're less likely to get caught out if GG goes into a passing funk meaning that she is strongly in play for the libero jersey. But again, we have a window closing next year, so I absolutely would welcome such a transfer.

The Badgers need a left side for 2024 to add depth. Ideally, they could add one with years of eligibility remaining, because they project to be very young, but talented, in 2025. Still, no way they are worse should Batenhorst choose to join them. Yes, Orzol at L2 is a viable option, people tend to forget the Badgers won the flipping national title with her there, but only having three left sides on the roster, one a freshman, would be a bit scary.

Not to be mean, but my favorite Batenhorst memory vs the Badgers is 2022 in Madison, Set 2, I believe, when Ashburn aced the Huskers during a serving run and Cook got pissy and pulled Knuckles. He put Batenhorst in to replace her, and Ashburn immediately targeted Batenhorst...and aced HER! It was a delicious Izzy "Yes I Will F@$k With You" Ashburn moment. 😝

I think Batenhorst could be good for the Badgers. I don’t think her overall stats tell the full story of her contribution to 2 championship seeking teams. I also think having serviceable options to step in (having Orzol available to move to the left pin, when she beat out lexi, that kind of thing) would play better for her. Idk. I could see it.

Right. But Arneal says she wants Beach, too. That’s a no-go in Madison. Snow volleyball, maybe. Beach, no.

If it’s true she wants to play beach she aint going places like wisky or penn state. Florida maybe or somewhere in west.

Nebraska and Texas have them, as do many other colleges (many of them small) located in places where it’s cold in the winter. It seems like if you started now and put your mind and resources to it, you could get it done in one year’s time.

They will have dedicated beach players and beach scholarships. Nebraska's beach team is nothing more than a ploy to allow the coaches to train indoor players during the spring and take them to Hawaii every year. Wisconsin is not going to start a beach team for a few reasons: 1. Facilities - We don't have indoor sand courts, nor do we have a place to put them. 2. Mindset - Wisconsin is not going to introduce a new sport unless they're willing/able to field a team/program of the caliber to compete for championships.

Mindset - Wisconsin is not going to introduce a new sport unless they're willing/able to field a team/program of the caliber to compete for championships. The facilities aspect seems like a matter of logistics and resources. I’m sure it’s possible to buy/lease indoor sand courts relatively quickly. Maybe they can be temporary. Or maybe that new complex being built for LOVB can have a couple? As for mindset, you have to start somewhere even if you aspire to win championships. I was thinking more along the lines of the Nebraska beach team model, at least to begin with. Anyway I’m pretty sure most of Texas’s beach volleyball team is currently taken from their indoor roster. Moreover I believe all four of PAC teams joining the Big Ten next year have a beach team. Thus it seems like a nucleus of a Big Ten Beach Volleyball Conference is already forming. Why not join in on the fun? And it really would be just for fun for a while —Wisconsin and Nebraska will unfortunately be cupcakes for USC, UCLA, etc for a while, but they’ll learn more quickly that way. Just trying to look at it a different way.
