Noting that it was 52 weeks ago today that we got the video announcing the non-conference schedule - "I am confusion" and "evilen froggen".
Also noting that the evilen froggen will be on this year's schedule...

I'm wondering how, or even if they try to top themselves this year.

Have any OHs entered the portal who would be good enough to be a starter for us next year?

Someone who's a better passer than Franklin would be good enough if you're in the "move Julia back to Libero" camp. But considering that Smrek to the middle is a reasonably likely option in a 5-1, having a high-level passing squad would really lean into our ability to side out.
Right now, a healthy Saige is probably the only other libero option that would give us the kind of passing that would enable that. But I'd be happy rolling with that. Hence, I'm not all that fussed about whoever we get in the transfer portal, other than that she be good enough so that if Julia goes down with injury we're not completely screwed (if Sarah goes down with injury we're screwed regardless).

Is Smrek to middle likely? I would figure the more nimble, laterally gifted player move to middle. Smrek stays on RS. Neither Devyn or Smrek are threats out of the back...right now...and Snrek's presence on the RS from a blocking perspective brings something quite unique.

I really hope Saige is healthy this year, when she did play last year I thought she was a game changer at times, I think give her some consistent time on the court and she'd be great

I think they’re just speculating based on the spring matches, in which Smrek was middle

I think they’re just speculating based on the spring matches, in which Smrek was middle Smrek played middle in the spring mostly because they only had seven healthy players, so whoever was on the right was going to play six rotations. And Devyn probably made more sense for that role. As much switching and crossing they do, who is officially designated as "MB" and who is "Opp" on the lineup sheet matters less for these guys that it would for a 'normal' team. Knowing very little about it (among many other things :-) would a "three middle" offense make sense for UW this year?

On my understanding of it, I think what you pointed out is why we saw the badgers running a 4-middle offense last year. In-system, I think the only MB/OPP that was only doing middle blocker things was Booth. On the other side of that system coin, only Booth didn't get OOS swings. But all 4 can hit in front of the setter, all 4 can run the slide. I'm going to be very interested to see what our the new setting will allow the badgers to do and how much it expands or (hopefully not) contracts what can be counted as an in-system ball. Two years ago, Izzy would pulled to the 3m line; on rare occasion, she would still push a quick to a waiting Danielle. Given our middle talent, would love to see more of it.

UW Home non conference schedule. UW Milwaukee 9-10, Marquette 9-17, Troy 9-20, Texas A&M 9-21 I'm not sure who else Wisconsin is playing this year, but this home slate leaves a lot to be desired for a team that is, on paper, challenging for a regional host seed. Milwaukee, Troy, and A&M just don't strike me as teams that will be doing Wisconsin favors in the RPI or nitty gritty in comparison to other top 4 seed challengers this year.
