Carlini gets her shot and moves on, leaving 2028 wide open for Charlie; i like it.
Charlie is too young. Carlini, Rettke, Booth and Frank in 2028!
If only Smrek wasn't Canadian......... Olympic Badgers team LOL.
Pretty sure Carlini has said this will be her last Olympic quad. Or she at least implied it very strongly in an interview earlier this year. It's a good question who will be the setter though.

I know of a certain PVF championship MVP who might be a good fit… hint hint, Karch. Been thinking about this and it really isn't a bad call. Hilley is a winner. She is persistent, smart and driven. She finds a way. What's interesting is that her generation of setters (eg Dilfer, Pukis) all seem to be playing domestically, while the Carlini-Hancock-Poulter generation all played overseas. If the US indoor pro model ends up being sustainable, it could represent a permanent sea-change in how setters are prepared and evaluated for the international game. In the past, players generally haven't been considered ready for the international stage unless they had played in the big overseas leagues. Will that still be true in the future?

I thought it was interesting how many of the USWNT players named to the Olympic squad were committed to LOVB for the fall and not a single one intends to play in PVF. I get why those players in the back half of their professional careers would want to come home to play in a new professional league but is it money that is the appeal for LOVB over PVF?

I also hope the next gen of setters aren't limited to only USA professional experience. Eliminating professional experience overseas will likely inhibit Olympic preparation considerably. The best volleyball leagues in the world are in Turkey, Italy, France and Russia. To no surprise, all 12 players on the Paris Games USA team roster have pro experience in those leagues. I am optimistic USA club/pro volleyball will be far more successful than what has happened to USA soccer (queue Taylor Twellman rant). The gobs of money thrown into USA youth soccer clubs still can't generate an iota of talent compared to the kids coming out of a favela in Latin America. MLS Soccer generates $1 billion in revenue and Team USA (men's) still couldn't qualify for the 2018 FIFA WC. Somehow the USA soccer clubs think they can compete internationally without requiring an investment into international development. I doubt women's volleyball will suffer the same blind arrogance of MLS/USA soccer, but the cautionary tale is there. There is no replacement for international development, but USA setters and liberos have it much harder to make it to a roster. _____ FYI, it appears Dana Rettke will be announcing her professional move to Turkey. That is a considerable move up from the already elite program she played at in Italy. Both Rettke and Plummer were added to the same Turkiye league team a few weeks ago. women.volleybox.net/dana-rettke-p21214

Well, I think analogies between PVF/LOVB to MLS are a bit of a stretch. Football is the primary sport in most of the world. It has deep cultural importance that casts a long shadow over other sports. By contrast, even in countries where volleyball is important, it’s still a secondary sport at best.
The US is not going to have a top tier pro soccer league in my lifetime. It just can’t compete. But I could see a top tier pro volleyball league develop. The US has won world championships in volleyball. There is enough money floating around in the US that you could see foreign players getting attracted here, especially those from the Americas.
I just don’t know how long it will take to establish a stable league. A lot of the big clubs in Europe, like the one Dana appears to be moving to, are long established athletic clubs that sponsor many sports, including football. The US does not really have institutions like that outside of the university system. That makes a US league susceptible to economic winds.
In the end, I think the best US hitters will still go overseas, but the roster limits to foreign born players that you see in Italy and Turkey limit opportunities for setters, and make the US options look better. That could have some interesting effects long term.

good morning wisconsin people. i am curious if any of you might have some experience with the milwaukee county transit system. i'll be flying into the mitchell airport for the women's college volleyball showcase and i'm pondering transportation options between the airport and my hotel.
is it easy to ride the bus? am i going to be set upon by packs of feral children who will steal my shoes?

I have not ridden them, but I do know that city buses show up pretty frequently at Mitchell while I am waiting for the Badger Bus back to Madison.

There are two routes that stop at Mitchell Field. The Green Route hits the East Downton side of Milwaukee. Route 80 travels through the West side of Downtown Milwaukee. $2 one way. What Hotel are you staying at? Route 80 is about every 15 minutes the main parts of the day. Not sure you can open this link. Be here goes. www.ridemcts.com/routes-schedules/80#Weekday
