I have no idea. I was just relaying what they said on the radio!

I'm feeling better about Trinity. Bradley is not the B1G, but I'm encouraged by her stats and comments of Sheff. Maybe she can contribute earlier than I thought.

Just got home and putting my thoughts here instead of the match thread since it will focus on the badgers. Disclaimer, this is purely eye test. Overall, a lot of upside to this team and my main takeaway is that we got better as the match progressed.
Everyone saw the court except Julia and Anna. Apparently ankle injuries, though Anna went through full warmup.
Fuerbringer is a setter the likes of which we haven't seen at Wisconsin in my time. I don't recall even Carlini pushing the 31 from past the 3-meter line as much Fuerbringer did in these three sets. She was pushing transition balls early in the match with so much speed that the hitters were not prepared; this got better as the match progressed on. Beyond that, she had a side set quick to Booth that didn't go down for a kill, but looked good. We have some connections to work out, but again, we looked better as the match went on. If we can get the same physicality as last year with just a touch more speed, I like what that could look like.
TSC improved as well. She got better recognizing what was available to her, but her trying to not get blocked seemed like it led to her hitting clean out. Her passing isn't to this level yet, but she can play some good floor defense. Her athleticism is crazy high and she certainly belongs at this level.
Frank seemed like she was getting slowed down more than I have grown accustomed to seeing. She wasn't erroring a ton or anything like that, just not a super efficient night. Held up as normal in the back row.
Devyn was solid, though not spectacular on offense. She can SERVE, which is great to see.
CC played middle all night long. Still not being used a ton in the offensive phase of the game, but still a great blocker. Had a solo on a commit, no celly.
Booth was a favorite target for Fuerbringer all night. Was power-tipping a lot. It worked, but it always feels borderline to me like it might get whistled anytime. I'm also not used to seeing her slide approach. Good as usual on the blocking end and not letting Bradley get anywhere down the middle of the court.
The best L combo of the night felt like Damrow in serve receive and GG on serve. Neither Schumacher nor Chan looked out of place when they were on court.
Anderson and Van Wie played serving subs, and they can both do that effectively. The one stat I looked at the big board for was the serving. 15 service errors on 9 aces is a ratio that i'd actually take on most nights.
Louisville is going to be a great early test. That said, I don't think this version of the Badgers wins two matches at the Fiserv and I'm OK with that. A new setter will have growing pains. A lot to be excited about for this team, especially if we can get healthy!

Was at the match. It will be a 5-1. Charlie is the real deal! The hitters better be ready to hit as Charlie is not afraid to set the ball everywhere. Sheff played everyone.( minus the two injured and or sick). A lot of nice defensive players on this team. Too many serving errors as usual. Bradley has a nice ball club. It was a nice test. The two Libero platoon is different and I will need to get used to it.

The thing about the two libero offense/defense switch is - if GG and Damrow are your two best smalls - is that makes neither available to be Devyn's DS.
Schumacker could be in the mix for one of those three roles, or 'two liberos' was something to play with in an exhibition, but will disappear when things start to count. Lots of options.
I thought Charlie had some really nice quick tempo sets later in the match.
TSC with nine kills and three errors, and I think all three errors were early on. Very encouraging, though I'm not sure about her blocking yet.
Orzol wasn't limping badly, but it was noticeable. Not very optimistic for next week, etc.

I would also like to see who will be the fourth OH. I don't get this. Why do you think there should be or even could be a 4th OH? There must be, as in at least an RS/MB/S who practices some at the OH position, “just in case”, god forbid, both starting OHs can’t go.

Ok, got back from the exhibition and had some time to unwind. Some thoughts: 1. Not sure I like the two separate liberos thing when we're working in another freshman passer/defender (TSC). There were several plays when there were clear confusions in the back-row about whose ball it was. When Julia comes back, with two 6-ros players that have played with each other for 2 years, it might be more feasible to do the 2 liberos thing.
2. GG struggles greatly in SR. Not like we didn't know this, but the messiest set for us came when she was the passing L, coincidence or not. So if we do the 2 liberos system, she has to be the defensive L. If Sheff decides he wants to stick with 1 for continuity, I'm not sure how she can start. Especially with a freshman setter still trying to build connections, we can't have Charlie running marathons around the court.
3. Speaking of Damrow and Schumacher, Lola was the best passer today. Damrow did pass decently, and is better at setting a 2nd ball than Schumacher I think, so tbh I think the starter at L is between them two. I lean Damrow because she is prob more used to the defensive assignments in the backrow, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's Lola.
4. Charlie was fine. Some plays where you can see the potential, the reversals that were Carlini-esque, or the middle pushes while running backwards from behind the 3 meters line, or the outside sets from her knees, but there were a bunch of whiffs and misconnects too lol. Tbh there were some sets that I thought if she just bump set instead of trying to be more fancy with an overhand set it might have been a more hittable ball, but I think there's a fine line to tread between reining some of that in plus letting her do the things that made her a top recruit. There were also some pushes to the outside that die on the hitter, so she would have to just get stronger to get those sets out all the way. All of this hopefully will come with time. But, if it wasn't already clear, we're running a 5-1, the potential for Charlie is there, we need to give her the reins to realize it.
5. TSC did better than I would have thought, especially on offense. The verticals are crazy, but she also blasted a bunch of balls into the next country. Blocking and passing are not there yet, but she's a serviceable backup pin, which is more than what I thought she could be at this point.
6. Frank seems to lack some heat on her hits, leading to her being dug more than I would expect again this type of competition. Maybe she was still taking it easy coming back from the ankle (as she should), or maybe the ankle is still lingering a bit. Either way, not really worry about the NPOY who just tore up international level competition.
This version of the team with Anna back but no Julia can beat Louisville, Kentucky, and Stanford, but we would be underdogs against Texas. Even with Julia back I think we would be underdog against Texas while working in a brand new setter.

It’s early. But concerned about Orzol. They need her. The 2 person Libero is likely what the Badgers will use. UCLA men’s used it and won a NC. This setter will eventuality make the Badgers better but they will go through some bumps early. Great atmosphere for an exhibition.

In predicting their record for the year, I had assumed the badgers would lose 2 of the three first matches precisely because of these growing pains and the limited time key players had available to practice. With Julia out for at least 1 match, and Anna having some down time with her rolled ankle, and Franklin still getting into playing shape, I would be happy with even that outcome. It does mean TSC and the different backrow players will get some valuable experience in real matches now since the badgers will have to figure out how to pass without Orzol.

Why is CCC throwing shade at Izzy and MJ? 😧
She’s (Charlie Fuehrbringer) super trusting. She’s willing to give anyone the ball at any point and time,” Crawford said. “I feel like that is something we really haven’t had and it’s awesome to be a part of.”

Wisconsin players have been rolling lots of ankles recently. Wisconsin has a new Taraflex court. Is that a coincidence?

Wisconsin players have been rolling lots of ankles recently. Wisconsin has a new Taraflex court. Is that a coincidence? I don't know that they are practicing on Taraflex all that much. The normal setup up for practice is the 'gold' sections are rolled back so that there is space for two side-by-side courts. Those are almost certainly not Taraflex. The Taraflex court last night was on 'risers', and at one point I saw a photographer sitting cross-legged at the edge of scramble a bit to move out of the way, and when he pushed his foot against the edge, the court surface lifted up for a second. So I'm sure the 'game day' surface is removable. Of course, some practice will be on the Taraflex court, but we'd need to know when the injuries happened and on which surface before we draw any such conclusions. (And Frank's rolled ankle happened a thousand miles away from Madison...)

Young at life but been around the college block.
