Welp, with this form, I'm just hoping we take one set of Texas/not get destroyed off the court. Stanford hopefully we can make it close at least. But expecting 0-3, hoping for a miracle 1-2 with a W against Stanford. Yes, and the mood of the team in our last huddle. They looked defeated. We need our leadership to step up. Missing Boyer, MJ, and Izzy from last year we lost so much leadership. We need our captains to rise to the challenge here in the near term.

3 observations: 1) Damrow wasn't excelling in SR; it could be because of Louisville. I dunno. 2) Franklin and Smrek weren't in their best form since return. 3) need heavy practice on serving. P.S. I miss Barnes the barnes and civita combo changed lives Maybe our liberos can't pass because in practice we serve everything out so they don't have to pass.

Barnes is the most under-appreciated Badger in recent memory.

Devyn isn't providing enough offense to force CC to stay on the bench. Badgers have sucked serving all night. Devyn REALLY rough. CC is a terrific server. And she's certainly every bit the BR player Dev is. 🤷 Devyn had 8 kills, and hit .353; 4 solo blocks ad 6 block assists. There were lots of problems tonight, but (other than her serving) Devyn was low on the list. "Other than the serving errors"? The service errors are the point. 4 service errors and not getting Louisville OOS when her serves were in. Does that offense make up for that? You don't think CC would've had comparable blocking numbers? On a night when Dev had ~25% of the team's service errors, CC serving ability and high level blocking was at minimum worth a shot. All I'm saying.

But expecting 0-3, hoping for a miracle 1-2 with a W against Stanford. They played like crap against the #6 team in the country, on their floor, won a set and took another to extra points. I don't think it was as bad as it "feels" right now. I do wish there was a little more time between now and Sunday, but we'll see.

OMG. You guys are so dramatic. This was the match I thought was least likely to win given recent injuries, and everybody is saying the sky is falling. I'm checking out for a while. Bye.

That wasn't true at all.

I do think our final form is better than Louisville and can match up with Texas, but welp, we're a long way from there clearly.

A question, if anyone knows:
How long can a team hold up play for a player who has a problem or injury?
Specifically, how long could Louisville spend stretching out cramping players before they have to call a full time-out or sub somebody in? (Were they charged with a time-out?) IIRC, we had taken a lead, but lost the point out of the 'yoga class', which killed the momentum (much like will happen when a team sides out after a actual time-out.)
----------------
Edit: looking at the live stats play-by-play, I think Louisville was indeed charged a time-out.
--------------
Edit #2: Louisville called a timeout with UW leading at 16-14. But the cramping happened at UW leading 17-16, and as best I can tell, no 2nd timeout was charged. They just got whatever time they needed.

Some positives I guess:
In the 1st set, when they were still respecting the middles, and thus our pins still had some airspace to hit we cruised. It was only once they found out that we can't set middles, or can only set slides (like seriously did Devyn get a kill on a quick? Cuz all I remember are slides and some hits as a RS pin), it was over lol. Unfortunately, middles connections can take months to establish (like I think Swindle's connection with Asija took like till near the end of the season lmao).
Sarah and Anna are clearly still not right. You can't tell me this is the same Frank that hit .300 on pros defense and the same Anna that hit .400 for the season, including .500 on Texas and .360+ on Nebraska in the Field House. They will be better. Yes, the mis-connections played a role, but I haven't seen Anna got blocked like this in like ever lol.
With Orzol back we have a .200 hitter for the other left instead of a negative hitter, no offense to TSC. Also Orzol passing 6-ros means we can even pinch our libero (tragic) in passing formations.
We will get better. A lot better. Our final form is easily a contender. Texas lost to LBSU last year in their first match lol, and had a lot of struggles with some middling teams. It's the form at the end that matters for the tourney.

Never easy to lose, but definitely better to get it out of the way now and grow from it the rest of the season. Louisville was going to be a tough matchup considering they only graduated one of their starters.
A few initial impressions:
1. The passing was better than I expected it to be, especially with a team as experienced as Louisville. I don’t have the passing stats, but only two aces in a four set match means that the passers are at least getting non the ball.
2. The two Libero system definitely helps the GG-passing issue, but it definitely seemed like Damrow never took charge of the backcourt and the Libero-split likely impacted this.
3. Fuerbringer is very talented, and I’m excited for her future in Madison. There was definitely some iffiness tonight, but that’s to be expected of a freshman setter in their first ever (huge) match.
4. The block is definitely weaker than the last two seasons. Booth in particular struggled with closing the block most of the night, and it put Louisville in some very good positions.
5. Franklin is incredible, but the offense really needs to be spread out to give her some rest. 60 swings is way too many on the first night of the season.
6. Robinson and Orzol were the MVPs for Wisconsin. Robinson closed the block well and had a strong offensive night (until the end), and Orzol’s backrow defense is unmatched. I’m not sure why Sheffield swapped Booth and Robinson at M1 and M2, but I’d keep Robinson in at M1 going forward.
7. Granted, Smrek’s not an easy player to set, but she shouldn’t have been blocked as often as she was. She can hit over any block on a good set, but she should be better at reading the block and using high hands to her advantage.
The Badgers will certainly learn from tonight and should have an amazing season. Hoping they are quick learners and dominate in the Fiserv this weekend!
