Concern. Last night in the post game presser Sarah said, "We don't have that edge right now." What? Everybody? Just some? And if they don't have that "edge" get them off of the court. This should NEVER be an acceptable statement for an elite, compete for the national championship every year, team. I can take a guess based on what I saw out in public in Milwaukee at the start of the year who might be the subject(s) of reference here. Sometimes it's good to "get away from the game" and have some fun. But if I looked as bad as I did in Milwaukee, I'd be spending my time between the two matches watching film and finding somewhere, where ever, to be working on my game to be better. Maybe a few weeks ago Kelly WAS actually referencing players not being properly focused on improving on their craft when he made comments in a presser. Bottom line, at this point in the season, it's unacceptable for one of your players to say we don't have the edge right now. I was thinking about this last night. I concluded:
1. We can't expect the freshman to put the team on their shoulders. When the veterans are shakey right out of the gate, it's contagious and hard to overcome if the vets don't right the ship quickly.
2. There is no Lauren Barnes on this team and her clone is not going to appear any time soon. I am talking about her leadership and refusal to tolerate anything less than all in. That said, she should have been the First Team All American libero in 2021 and The Badgers aren't going to have another one of those for a while either.
Fire away. I'm moving on to the big match on Tuesday night.

Per Sarah’s closing remarks the team is struggling with drive and motivation.
I’ve noticed this in many interviews…Kelly really struggles to think quietly LOL he sounds like he’s dying up there

Wow the stats really amplify the eye test, I didn't look at them until this morning. Oof. Your good players have to play well to beat the best teams and Bucky didn't have that last night.
On to the next.

Passing was an issue but it was more that Anna couldn't find the court and our block and serve was atrocious outside a stretch in game 2.

Oh...And Kelly benching Robinson and not making changes. He's really put this team in a very challenged position with his decision-making.

A positive from last evening that has yet to be pointed out - CC was the real deal in the back row after serving. She had a few digs and even laid out!! Kudos to you CC! Some may say you lack offense but you have the heart and FIRE of a champion. Really cool to see a “big” play backrow like that

This 👆🏼👆🏼 right here is the issue! 3 MH’s and he can not figure out an efficient use of (starters and rolls) three littles (lib) first one is lib, then 2 are lib, now one is lib and she was serving target last night! Frehman setter that he works with then beings in Carlini who not officially coaching but adds another layer of instruction/advice for An already over whelmed setter! Lack of leadership from top has slipped. Role confusion for players, role importance for assistance and getting whole machine in same direction: the bosses job! And last night fresh lib passing and fresh setter location and variability of sets cost the Badger!

I am compelled one more time to point out that in the 14 week regular season of the 2021 championship team, Sheffield used 14 different starting lineups. The lineup of Smrek as opposite and Jade Demps as the designated backrow attacker didn't emerge until into November.

Completely agree: team responded positively in 2021: lockeroom leadership and coaching staff and experienced setter. Different year dif staff diff players: and injuries sometimes cause 14 limeups: this seems “frantic” : it feela like doubt about choices: last night a couple assistants seemed to be imploring coach: not just informational transfer. Staff interactions looked shaky? I hope not just looking at where they are : hell Texas last year got it together late. Its certainly not over by any means just need time only time is getting shorter!

There's a reasonable chance that UW is a very good volleyball team this just isn't as good as some others, and will make it to the second weekend of the tournament but not the third. That might be the best they are capable of. But there is ZERO chance I'm going to think I know more about volleyball in general and this team in particular than Sheffield does.

More positives - holding Jackson to 0.118 and 3 other hitters in the 0.100's (I won't be sad to see Beason graduate, however).

I agree.
The 2021 Championship team was 13-1 after week 14. The 5th year seniors who returned to complete their "unfinished business" were superior in every way to the 2024 "unfinished business" returnees. We would have been shocked to hear Rettke or Hilley or Barnes or Loberg, or all of them sitting at the table after a big loss, say "we don't have that edge". They wouldn't be in that position.
I certainly don't know how 2024 will end, but I'm willing to say that this team isn't going to morph into something that it inherently is not, i.e., a self-actualizing juggernaut, over the remainder of the season. Prove me wrong Badgers.

I do like to see Addy Horner still showing love for the badgers, reposting the photo of the Fieldhouse thanking the fans

Of course, both of those hit our RPI. ncaastats.figstats.net/volleyball-rpi.cgiTexas loss hasn’t been added yet, but Wisconsins still top 10 in the RPI. Hosting the regionals is out of the question, but still a solid enough resume for a 2 seed There is a narrow path to hosting the regionals, but only if the badgers get better and things fall just right. They’ve kind of stalled right now.

My take on that match is that the badgers still aren’t consistent enough during a match to hang with a team that executes. Some of the husker runs were basically just a series of badger errors of one sort or another. The badgers aren’t playing clean enough.
It was a good match to experience because we have not played a team that good this year. Most of the teams the badgers have played are flawed in some major respect or just didn’t play well, and I include the first three of the year, and even the gopher match. It’s good to have a reference against which to measure how far you have to go.
They can get there, but they aren’t there yet. I hope the players can use this moment.
