Even if its replacing Robinson with her its a significant better hitting percentage just by replacing Devyn. sub 200 vs over 500 for Smrek. And actually having Smrek serve for herself is a plus idea. So 4 out of 6. Then you're emliminating the high number of tight sets to the net Izzy is constantly putting forth getting a better connection with Booth. The embarrassing fact is Sheffield just sat there and took a beating when it is more than obvious actions he could have taken to stem the tide much sooner. Smrek wouldn’t replace Robinson. The setter across the front row would and it would significantly hurt us on the block and not do much to help us with defense in the back. Smrek serving is a plus but she also has to play back row d after she serves and off a good pass teams will target it right back at her. We were a 6-2 team this year for better or worse. It gave us our best chance by playing to our biggest strengths. And it got us to the Final Four where we ran into a team that is playing their best ball late in the year. Losing to Texas in the Final Four isn’t like losing to Indiana or someone on a Wednesday night. They are the defending national champs playing in the Final Four. Outside a bad start to the season, while they broke in a freshman setter, they have probably been a top 5 team. The serving last night was as poor as I recall seeing this year and really allowed Texas to tee off on us. I promise you they were not serving it easy on purpose on the coaches orders. Yes the coaching staff could have tried to make some adjustments but at some point the players need to play. Texas players were just better than ours last night. I am not talking about rotation patterns. If Robinson is not in the 5-1 rotation at all then she is most definitely being 'replaced by Smrek. Either you are confused or lying.

Furby is young but she is going to be an upgrade at setter for the Badgers IMO Fuehrbringer Charlie Furbs Furby I’m ok with any of those. They call Julia “Oz”, so maybe the team will come up with a nickname that’s far easier to say and spell?

"I also already explained that Anna had over 500 hitting percentage vs sub 200 for Robinson when they were in for their rotations in a 6-2 yesterday."
And I will try to explain one more time that this is immaterial to the consequences of your suggestion on a MJ-Smrek 5-1 offense.
Your 5-1 does NOT increase the amount of time that the .500 hitter is front row!
It replaces the .200 hitter with a player who is setting, and not attacking.
"I already said 4 out of 6 spots Anna would be in including a spot to serve."
At the expense of having the all-time aces leader in program history NOT serving. (And unless you're leaving Smrek in to receive serve and play floor defense, it would be more like 3 and a half, not "four".)

On a Positive note...
Sarah Franklin is a contender for POTY, and I've heard that the voting took place before last night. Is that accurate?
Looking ahead, Madison has a promising future with LOVB's arrival set to enhance the volleyball scene in Wisconsin. The return of Lauren Carlini is super super cool. In the future, Carlini's interest in coaching could lead to an amazing mentorship with Charlie

Recently watched TSC Trinity Shadd Ceres' highlights, particularly impressed with her back row attacks. Being a dual athlete gives her a unique advantage – her jumping ability and hang time are remarkable.

If TSC can be consistent she could add a dynamic back row attack for sure.

"Yeh that's real controversial get your best performing player Smrek on the court much more!" How would running an MJ-Smerk 5-1 put "Smrek on the court much more"? Was she going to play backrow? In the 6-2 UW runs, Smrek plays three front row rotations, then gets subbed out. In a 5-1, Smrek would play three front row rotations, and then get subbed out. Even if its replacing Robinson with her its a significant better hitting percentage just by replacing Devyn. sub 200 vs over 500 for Smrek. And actually having Smrek serve for herself is a plus idea. The embarrassing fact is Sheffield just sat there and took a beating when it is more than obvious actions he could have taken to stem the tide much sooner. Texas figured-out our weakness in serve-receive and exploited it. That was the difference. I don't see how switching to a 5-1 would have strengthened our serve-receive. I think what happened here was less the result of Sheffield not making tactical moves and more the result of the evolution of the roster -- we ended-up with not enough talent available in the back row. Clearly Sheffield as coach has to take responsibility for the roster, but on the other hand sometimes you just get a little unlucky (e.g.; Damrow's injury).

Don’t mind me —I'm just enjoying highlights of our 2024 recruits during my lunch break, LOL. Maile Chan's solid float serve, reads, and speed have caught my attention. Excited to see how Coach Britt will develop her skills www.hudl.com/video/3/14137671/62985ada64e0640944a943e8

I would advise her to not take that nickname as a compliment. Because we just had a morning sermon on this forum about roses and sunshine. Furbs I kinda like

5-1 against Texas in 4th set would look like this. I must say I like it.
Setter Hammill OH1 Franklin OH2. TTA MB Booth MB Robinson OR Crawford OPP Smrek /DS G. G. Libero Orzol

Smrek would play the same 3 rotations at the front with or without Robinson on the floor. So what you are talking about is just removing Robinson all together as the odd one out and switching to a 5-1. Unless you have figured out a way to keep Anna on the front row for more than 3 rotations which I’d be excited to hear about. Minus that what is your thoughts on what to do with Smrek once she rotates to the back row for 3 rotations? Personally I’d like to find a way to keep Robinson on the floor since she’s an All American in 2 positions. Clearly she was struggling with some injuries thru the year but she stilllba hell of a player even at not quite 100 percent. Sliding her over to the other pin to replace TTA might be worth at least exploring.

Libero Orzol How does that make our back row defense or our serve recieve any better than it was last night. I’ll agree that MJ is the better setter but Izzy is far better at defense in the back row. If you are going to remove CC or Robinson(which I am not advocating for) I’d rather run a 5-2 with MJ across the front and to serve and the Izzy across the back after MJ was done serving.

Dev could bump Caroline from MB2 as she poses little offensive threat on an elite opponent. I would let Anna serve for herself the amount depending how great serve is and how bad her floor defense is. This year would have Boyer or Reed DS for her back row slots. Next year I would love to see Schumacher DS for Smrek.

This thread has gone exactly the way I thought it would. C’est la vie. I’m excited for 2024. There’s no reason I shouldn’t be. What a program we’ve grown to have.
I took a moment to reflect while grumpily eating my postgame frozen pizza last night. Reflecting on the game, but the more I thought about it, the easier it was to sign off as a disappointing end to a still remarkable year. No, they did not play well. I wish they had. Some of my favorite players had some of their roughest games. It’s happened before. Regrettably, I imagine it will happen again at some point. It will be remarkable if it never does.
But I reflected on the sixteen times I walked into the Field House this year (I missed the Purdue game because of a neighborhood meeting) and felt the energy and passion of an invigorated fan base. I thought about the buzz as Danielle and Shanel unveiled a Big 10 Championship banner that needed its own end because we’d filled up the south end with banners over the last few years.
I thought of Izzy firing serves that defy the laws of flight, of Dr. Crawford slicing in for a block and walking back to the service line with a locked-in expression, GG punctuating every moment with flying hugs and wonderful expressions of energy, of the old faces of Anna and Devyn with the new faces of Carter and Temi to build a wonderful wall. I think of Sarah Franklin emerging as a do-everything wonder woman and doing it all while giggling a fair amount of the time.
I also thought about my whole journey with this program, the name on the front of the jersey. I think of the nervous middle schooler asking Amy Lee to sign that one page sheet of white printer paper roster you could grab on your way into the Field House back in the day. I think of the fact that we would have won in 2000 if Claudia Rodriguez hadn’t hurt her shoulder. I remember going up to Green Bay and watching us go blow for blow with undefeated Hawai’I in the Resch Center and coming out on top. I remember taking the athletic department for all it’s worth with my Red Card each year, flashing it like a VIP admission ticket on my way in to stand in the student section. It’s been decades of memories.
But I don’t take this program for granted. I remember walking into the Field House around game time in 2012 and sitting in the third row in the end zone people now sprint to fill. I remember walking out of the Field House resigned after getting swept by Penn State AGAIN. I think about what I would tell the few people sitting around me if I said that people would be FURIOUS after we lost in the final four, our fourth final four in five years. I wish I could wave my arm and perform a Field of Dreams ghost image where the people in the north end in 2012 could see the banners in the south end in 2023.
Everyone’s entitled to be a fan in their own way. Live your life. For me, I hope I never take the success so for granted that the losses outweigh them. I hope I come away from this season remembering the unveiling of the banner and the emergence of Super Franklin and the emphatic denial of Nebraska’s effort at an undefeated season and everything far more than the last couple sets of an unfortunate end. Let me not become so jaded that anything that isn’t a championship is a failure.
So I hope each and every one of our beloved faces come back. I’m excited for Charlie to etch her name amongst the legends on the wall of the west concourse as she takes the helm of our program. I’m excited to see Saige and Lola and Maike join GG and relentlessly defend the floor in spectacular fashion. I’m excited to see Ella’s patience pay off. I’m excited to see Julia and Tosia become a Polish duo to be reckoned with. I’m excited to see Trinity fly. I’m excited to see how much further Sarah can take her game.
I’m excited for 2024. Why should I not be? We are Wisconsin, and we are fantastic.
