Cook on his negotiation:
“When Troy and I talked about my contract, I proposed that instead of an annual escalating salary that some coaches do, it would mean a great deal to me if the Nebraska Athletic Department would consider supporting me in purchasing a horse out in central Nebraska that I’ve had my eye on.
“The horse, called No. 415, was born and bred at the famous Pitzer Ranch in Ericson and is a once-in-a-lifetime performance horse. He was purchased as a weanling by Mark Wray and then trained by the Wray family. Troy loved the idea and while they couldn’t specifically write that into the contract, the retention bonus will be used for No. 415. I am honored that Troy was supportive of my idea and it means a lot to me. We are all looking forward to what should be an exciting 2024 season.”

Additionally, Cook will receive a retention bonus of $70,000 on July 1, 2024." Since realizing years ago that he couldn't do it all by himself and that full time intense focus on volleyball was not good for him, he has been deeply involved in a series of compelling consuming "hobbies". This has been his way of focusing on his health. At one time it was planes, now it's horses. As a side bar, IMO, more of the assistant coaches who worked with the "new" Cook have gone on to more success than those who worked under the "old" Cook.

You have obviously never been to the Tetons in Wyoming, where Cook has his ranch. It is unbelievably beautiful out there. I love Nebraska, but there is a reason the Jackson, Wyoming area is called "God's Country". I have been there several times for extended vacations to the Tetons and Yellowstone and I have loved it every time. I believe his daughter, Lauren Cook-West, also lives out there.
