This just in: BYU can’t pass. Again. Been aced 8 times in a game and a half. Edit- make that 9. #freemialee the announcers said early on she was beat out by the other two middles...is this true? that just seems weird

But she could play OPP instead of Kate Pryor. OR……..redshirt her. One of the MB’s is a grad student. Oh wait, she played two garbage points last week, so no redshirt.

Yes-both middles are doing a good job. Ticks me off Mia played 2 points to burn a redshirt year. BYU up 2-1. Bobick (sp?) playing OPP and so far big improvement over Pryor.

Getting aced 15 times is unacceptable. The box score is kind of wild. I didn't watch the match and have no plans to, but the team hit .393 and got 17 kills out of the middle. So the setting couldn't have been that bad. Anyway, both outsides had big matches again (13-2-23 for Mortensen and 13-4-23 for Little). It's kind of sad for Pryor that Bobik didn't even really play that well (4-2-11) but was still an upgrade. I'd like to see them try Lee at opposite.
Edit: I just checked to see who was on the wrong end of those aces. I guess if you get aced six times like Little was, you better hit .391.

I couldn't get to the game tonight. But, from what I am reading, it looks like passing was an issue, but somehow we managed a win with middle and OH hits. What I worry about is we seem to do well with the middle hits, but that is due to good passes. If the pass is not there, the setting suffers with overall athleticism. The test will be with bigger, better teams and how we adjust with the setting to non-passes or if we can just get the passing down, that would solve the problem? But, hey, we got a win tonight!!

I can’t argue with the middles or outsides (Mortensen was a surprise!) that are playing. But I HATE seeing Lee on the bench. And since she played for 2 points last night, I guess she’s not redshirting. Would love to see her at OPP. Kate Prior just looks very awkward out there as a hitter. Great blocker, but offensively a bit of a liability. Not sold on Billeter as a libero. Agreed. It remains to be seen how she does against better opponents, but Kemavor may have developed into the player I hoped she would be. She could end up being the most physically imposing BYU player since Jennifer Hamson. But Lee was so good last year that I'd like to see them try her on the right side. She isn't super tall, but she can jump out of the gym, and I think she would provide more firepower there than we've had recently. bbg - finally agrees with me that Lee should have been put at Opp immediately. Prior should be in the middle. BYU is loaded with MB's now but it carrying too many OH's and not enough passers. I am surprised that GT beat them at BYU, but it is the same old song in the passing dept and although Alex Bower is 3 inches taller than Whitney she can't jump as high .... so where W Bower put up a average block, Alex is below average and she will be exposed in B12 play. Damuni was a better blocker and athlete than Bower. I stay with my prediction of 6-7 losses on the year for BYU and lackluster passing.

Heather doesn't car for Lee's father. I just wonder if there are some personal politics going on there. Lee is a far better Opp than anyone on the BYU roster. She should have been put there immediately upon arrival at campus. But, nope! Will she make her way out there with Heather? My guess is no, unless the season starts sliding away. I am waiting to see the USD and Oregon matches for more insight. Go ahead bbg ... agree!

That many aces is totally unacceptable. Little can pass well but she has always been inconsistent ... up and down. I like the physicality of Mortensen at OH but she is a beneficiary of good middle play. She has the strength in her shoulder that no OH's have except Little. But, and this is a big but, she isn't a good jumper. Her ball has velocity but very little height off the net. This will come back on her against better blocking teams. BYU could survive on middle hits they had good passing. The middles, as a tandem, might be top 3 in the country. Lulu is another passer than can pass well with straight shots, but if and hit requires movement horizontally or quick backward movement, the result is a problem. As she gets older the problem of quickness will increase.

This team gives me anxiety. At least they finally won a five-setter.
