They lost a bunch of players, including arguably their best player who is now a Longhorn. I strongly feel like Tennessee will be more in a rebuilding mode next season, but we’ll see. I will be shocked if they’re anywhere near as good this year as they were last season. Kubik and Cajic could end up being a better pin duo than Moore and Lovett were last year. Kerr is underrated and should be better. I think Yelianiz is the biggest loss after Finghall.
They should still be top half of the conference.
I still don’t think they’re going to be a host team, or compete for the SEC title. At least this next season. I’m also not saying they can’t beat Texas. The Longhorns lost to Iowa State and Kansas State the last two years. They could certainly lose to Tennessee. But neither Iowa State nor Kansas State were close to competing for the Big 12 title in those years. Similarly, I don’t think Tennessee will be in a position to compete for the SEC title this coming year. That’s not the same as saying they’ll be a conference cellar dweller, because I think they’re past that as a program. But the question was am I concerned as a Texas fan about Tennessee challenging Texas for the SEC title next year given that they took Texas to the brink of elimination in Palo Alto in the tournament, and the answer to that is an unequivocal no.
