4. Texas knew Florida very well, but for some reason haven't played each other much in many years. Florida and Texas don't have lots of history directly scheduling each other in the regular season. In fact they met three times in the playoffs (1987, 1991, 1992) before they first met in the regular season (1993 in Austin and 1994 at Florida, and they also met in the tournament those two years). In 1995 they met twice in the regular season and then, for the fifth straight year, played again in the tournament. So by the end of '95 their history was six tournament matches and four regular season matches. They had regular season matches in '96 and '98 to balance the tally at six, with Florida holding a 9 - 3 edge. Had Mick not left Texas, perhaps Texas and Florida would have continued the fledgling habit of scheduling each other. The coaching matchups from the Texas perspective, pre-JE: 1 - 0 Mick Haley vs Marilyn McReavy 2 - 8 Mick Haley vs Mary Wise 0 - 1 Jim Moore vs Mary Wise ----------------------------------------- 3 - 9 Total (2 - 9 against Mary Wise) (When you look at the above it becomes obvious, for those who are not aware, why Texas tried to hire Mary Wise away from Florida after firing before hiring Jim Moore.) Since then we have: 7 - 6 Jerritt Elliott vs Mary Wise Of those 13 matches, three were part of the Nike Big Four series ('10, '11, '12); three were part of the VERT Challenge ('15, '17, '18), and three were in the tournament ('07, '12 and '15). The other four: '01 in Austin; '04 in Florida (planned during the Moore era?); and one each Austin and Florida in '14 (related to Texas choosing not to play Florida during the '13 Nike Big Four tourney in Austin?). Summarizing: "regular" scheduling in '93, '94, '95 (2), '96, '98, '01, '04, '14 (2); total 10 matches; playoffs 9 times; early season tourneys 6 times. It should be fun going forward as conference foes.

Pre-Josh Taylor, Mizzou consistently had very good attendance. Hereโs to hoping that will happen again

Mizzou2023 Recap: Perhaps the true surprise story of the year in the SEC. The roster was stitched together with the remnants of the Taylor era and included a seemingly random collection of parts (four setters on the roster โ FOUR!) So of course they bring in Texas 2023 backup setter Marina Crownover to make it FIVE! setters for 2024 (as of now). Their 2023 freshman setter started every match, so clearly she beat out the two junior setters. Where does Marina fit in here, new primary backup? Interesting that Crownover will be with the same coach who talked Jhenna Gabriel out of retirement to lead UNLV to the tournament.

For those SEC teams visiting Austin for the first time this coming Fall, a short introduction to our old, creaky gym. Gregory Gym, built in 1930. A/C was added to Gregory in 1998 in a major 3 year renovation that added a modern, parallel rec sports building/gyms next to Gregory. It has in indoor pool, down in the basement area. The playing surface for volleyball is the old gym wood strips, but the entire floor is suspended on springs (according to JE) and provides some give. The gym does not have Terraflex because: 1) there is no room to store the Terraflex when the gym is not being used for volleyball. 2) Volleyball (UT Athletics) rents the floor space from the Rec Sports department which uses the gym for other things during the year. From the 1930's: JE does not want to move from Gregory because he believes the atmosphere gives his team an edge because the bleachers and chairs are very close to the players. This is a major frustration to fans who are waiting behind "grandfathered" season ticket holders for better reserved seats to open up.
Old video where you can see how close the fans are to the players: A picture of recent NCAA first round where our libero is serving right in front of the high donor seating chairs. They're used to having the girls' butts in their faces during serves. It annoys some visiting teams, but it's within NCAA guidelines for serving space.
The old border was burnt orange. JE had it painted black a few years ago so that in/outs could be seen better. SEC has said no black borders, so it's been repainted with a white border, but no one has snapped a picture of the new white border.

And it is LOUD, especially when Texas serves. The noise disrupts the communication on the opposing teams.

After Texas fired Jim Moore, seemed like Jerritt Elliott was quickly hired. In both of those coaching "searches", I don't recall reading/hearing about any other coaching candidates who might have been in play.
