Hartmann in for Byrnes.
They also made an announcement right after the first serve for the Minnesota fans to stop making noise with their plastic blow-up axes.
YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME?! Is this America or the USSR??
The crowd is enraged.
Megan Bowman blocked by Byrnes and Florian. That can't be right. What'd they do with the middle blocker? Squeeze her into mush? Hell, I just said Hartmann in for Byrnes. Musta been Nelson.
3-3
Hitting error by Pflum
4-3 MN
KBow on a two in the middle 5-3
Service error 5-4
Kill by Florian 6-4

How much longer are you going to let me do this?
Wait a sec. I missed Nelson's error on a slide 5-5, THEN 6-5 on Florian's kill.
Florian back to serve.
The ref blows the whistle. Sarah bounces the ball, once. Twice. She eyes her target.
KBow out of the middle again. 7-5.
MBow stuffed by Nelson. 8-5.
Service error. 8-6.
Backrow kill from Florian. 9-6.

Hate to spoil your fun, but according to richkern this match is already over. I won't spoil it for everyone so you can go over and check the score yourself.

Nelson back to serve. The whistle is blown, sounding like a duck being dropkicked.
"Apple" Cobler puts it away from the rightside, our first first-swing sideout of the night.
9-7 MN
Meghan Cumpston answers in kind. 10-7.
There's some more activity with the blow-up axes. Security is called.

I am at courtside right now. OK. I admit it. I'm a fraud. Minnesota wins 30-26, 30-22, 30-25. Meghan Cumpston hits .414 (16-4-29) and Sarah Florian .303 (13-3-33). Jessy Jones has 9 blocks (4 solos) and hits .333. Nelson has 5 and hits .313.

Florian and Cumpston were very good, by the way. And the combinations of Florian-Peniata-Gentil-KBow passing and defending is pretty good (not that KBow was passing).

The crowd is enraged. I was actually rather happy to hear this done. I'm tempted to send the coach a thank-you letter or e-mail, expressing my appreciation for his efforts to encourage good sportsmanship, and noting how glad I'll be when I travel to Cliff Keene arena later this season, to not have MI students dangling shoes over the servers' heads, and yelling in their ears to distract them.

I actually did send an email to the director of athletics at UM last year detailing the rediculous behaviour of the fans at the end of the building but in particular the complete rudeness and unsportmanlike behaviour of the band members the previous year, hoping something would be done about it for last year. I reminded him of the TV commercial I'd seen where the focus was the Big Ten and the attention to sportsmanship that was paid and the dedication each school had to that end, having the athletic directors of each Big Ten school make an appearance in the commercial. I went to the band leader at the end of the match and complimented him that he had one of the best bands I had heard but absolutely the worst in terms of sportsmanship. His response--"thank you." As a coach of several sports my #1 priority has always been sportsmanship demonstrated on and off the playing surface but it is obviously not a thought by most in the Keene Arena.

Score one (or 29 really) for the Gopher left side attackers. I actually like the (not-so?) Keen Arena at Michigan. Of course, since I saw the Badgers win there, that improves my opinion. It is intimate with good sight lines, but I do wish all the teams in the conference had venues that could seat at least 3000-4000 people. Rude behavior from Michigan students? Hmmm.... Must have been the 11th coffee of the day. I was in a section of rude students my freshman year of college. We had plastic bones because we were the Bulldogs. It was fun. Every possible joke was made. Those things made a lot of noise. I know the sport a lot better now and am not rude like that anymore. I guess it is a college phase, at least for most people.

The student Zone hasn't lost all of it's charm. While some of their stuff is outrageously funny (singing O Canada comes to mind), they still haven't outgrown comments like "buy some tits, b!". The shoes stay on their feet, though, which helps the rest of us breathe.
