SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA -- The 25th-ranked Long Beach State women's volleyball team rebounded from its loss to UC Santa Barbara on Friday night with a 3-1 win over conference foe, Cal Poly on Saturday evening. Game scores were 30-27, 30-28, 24-30, 30-24. Long Beach State improved to 11-4 (1-1 Big West), while Cal Poly fell to 9-4 (2-2 Big West). The 49ers have won five straight matches over the Mustangs since the 2003 season. Rosie Lewis notched a career-high 20 kills to go along with five blocks, while Alexis Crimes turned in 14 kills (.464 attack percentage) and six blocks to lead Long Beach State. Ali Daley also contributed 14 kills to round out the top 49er kill leaders. Heather Laudato registered a match and season-high 28 digs for The Beach. Despite hitting just .159, Long Beach State limited Cal Poly to a .147 hitting percentage. Vanessa Gilliam poured in 22 kills in the losing effor for Cal Poly. The 49ers unlocked a 22-22 tie in the first game with a 3-1 run to take a 25-23 lead courtesy of a Crimes kill. The Mustangs trimmed the 49er lead to one point (26-25) after a service error by Daley. However Lewis netted the next two 49er kills to give The Beach a 28-26 advantage. A Mustang attack error ended the stanza at 30-27. Long Beach State held off a late run by Cal Poly in the second game for the 30-28 win, before dropping the third game, 24-30. The 49ers responded in the fourth set with a quick 4-0 lead, capped off by a Crimes kill, to start the game. LBSU pushed its lead to 18-10 after a Cal Poly service error, and held a 23-17 lead after a Taylor Peyton service ace. Daley ended the match with her 14th kill. Last time I checked both LBS and UCSB were tied with identical conference records! And we get em at our house next time!
