Here's the contenders. Pick ten. Put them in order. Then pat yourself on the back. You've just done something that'd make Einstein envious.
(I present them in the order I have them. Gawd hep me.)
KSU -- swept by Texas at home, but then spank TAMU 3-0. Maybe they should be higher than 21?
Ohio--impressive record, lots of sweeps, but Tennessee remains their only win of consequence. Still, Tennessee is a good gauge for many of these teams.
LSU--how much stock can we put in a 20-18 5th game neutral court win over Notre Dame? But then's there's another Tennessee sweep to help. Loss to Alabama, on the road, keeps them in the 20s.
Tennessee--our standard. Losses to Missouri, Ohio, Purdue, LSU and Louisville. Wins over 21-30 contenders Utah and Arkansas. Alabama x2 and Notre Dame on the schedule. My pick for biggest disappointment of 2005.
Kansas--swept by Texas Tech (who's decent, but still _not_ a good loss), then 5 against Colorado. 5-game loss to Texas, 4-game loss to BYU, and sweeps of TAMU and Alabama earlier. This is a team that's in here by default--they aren't playing as well as I thought they would.
TAMU--one of the biggest problems in the 20s. 0-4 now in the Big12, but what a brutal schedule. They beat LSU in 5 and swept St Marys. Another iffy proposition.
Ohio State--I know it must drive some people crazy the Buckeyes are still even considered for the top 25-30, but who else? They swept LBSU and beat Purdue. But horrible losses at home to the Huskers and PSU, 5-gamers against Cleveland State and Bowling Green -- and a 5-game loss to Illinois. Took BYU to 5. This one is just one of many which drives me batty.
LBSU--SWEPT by UCSB! Plus 5-gamers against Sac State and UNLV. But you can't ignore the wins over Pepperdine, Arkansas and St Marys.
St Marys--yet to prove they belong here. Good wins over ASU, CSN, UCSB, Utah State look less good now. They have LMU and Pepperdine at home this week. Time to show us what they got.
Maryland--the ACC is just impossible to gauge and Maryland is one of the big reasons. They are now 14-0 and have played absolutely no one. Virginia is probably their best win and it took them 5. To make matters worse, they only have ACC competition the rest of the way. This team could go undefeated and we still won't know if they are worthy of #30.
Pepperdine--big win over San Diego, then big step back against Santa Clara today. Bad loss to CSN early. They've played a lot of good teams and the scores have not been that close. LBSU loss is what, for me, keeps them out of top 30 (and LBSU in).
Western KT--18-1 with no standout wins and their sole loss to Illinois State. Nothing on the schedule. Who knows?
Duke--see Maryland. Losses to Rice and Clemson.
Utah--underachieving, but with great potential. Losses to Tennessee (swept), Arkansas (5), HUGE win in 5 over Santa Clara, HUGE loss in 5 to New Mexico. I think this team should be in the top 30, but I'm having a hard time justifying it. I've had them as high as #20.
LMU--big win over Hawaii, but lost to Sac State. Then lost twice this weekend at home (to top 20 Santa Clara and San Diego). Definitely a team to look at closely. They play at St Marys this week. A win and they are top 30 in my book. A loss, and maybe they should _still_ be top 30.
Arkansas--a good team, but they lost to LBSU and MO State. Nice win over Alabama today. LSU and Kentucky this week.
Alabama--see Arkansas. But they beat LSU. Not much else to go on.
Wichita State--beat MO State, there. Lost to Michigan State and Stevie Austin. Yikes. Just MVC matches left.
Rice--another Texas Tech victim. And now they lost, today, to UTEP. They've beaten Duke, Sac State, Illinois--although that last win is worth almost zilch now.
Others on the radar: Nevada, Utah State, Sac State, MO State, CO State.
