UCLA seems to do this every season.....having no non conference home matches. I believe they did it this past season also.
I don't understand the reason. Is it a money thing where they don't want to open the Pauly for small crowds? It can't be that nobody wants to play there. I'm almost sure of that.
It's great you want to challenge your players and put them thru adversity early but I think the girls deserve to play at home, sleep in their own beds and have their own fans root them on.

UCLA is on quarter system. School starts on late September. They have not scheduled non conference matches at home for years

Even though UCLA is on a quarter system, they can still play at home ….can’t they? I mean there should be folks working at the University athletic department even though the students are not there. Fans who are not student athletes like parents, alumni, or fans of the other schools can fill the stand. Their football team and their soccer team should be in season. Does soccer have non conference home matches?

Does soccer have non conference home matches? Most larger universities need those big arena spaces for freshman orientation, welcome back sessions, &c. I would guess it's mostly the issue of it being better used for other purposes. Most other schools are completely finished with these things prior to the beginning of pre-season.

UCLA has played matches in the Wooden Center in the past. I have to think they’d consider that if they really wanted to play at home And couldn’t use Pauley for whatever reason.

The quarter system should not be used as an “excuse” for not playing non conference home matches. UCI and Berkeley are also on a quarter system and they play home non conference matches. Cal plays at Haas so they are using their big arena for those matches..
Yeah…like a previous poster stated, why not play in Wooden then if Pauley is not available?
Anyway, this is my final post in this subject, I’ll just leave the head scratching decisions up the the UCLA people. 👍👍

During my freshman year, every home match was played at the Wooden Center due to Pauley being renovated. It was 2011 and UCLA went on to win the natty. I actually liked the matches at Wooden more than the new Pauley. A couple thousand people. Standing room only. More raucous and uncomfortable for visiting teams. Wouldn’t suggest volleyball move there permanently of course, but it’s a doable and even fun change of scenery if necessity requires it or if they don’t feel like opening up all of Pauley for a non-conference match while students aren’t on campus.
If first year orientation is still split up into sessions throughout the summer, there are definitely times in early September where they could try to coax some new Bruins to a match at Wooden. I went to the last orientation session before move in week and would have gone to a match.

Well I stand corrected then but still, you have the other UC schools on quarter system and they still play home non conference matches .

Oregon is on the quarter system. They’re hosting Pittsburgh and Long Beach State the opening weekend, but their next 5 matches are away from Eugene until they return to play Oregon State right before the start of conference play. Last year they had no non conference home games, though.

How does UCLA handle the consistent tough matches and 5-7 hour flights both ways for an entire conf season? I won’t be surprised to see them struggle once November hits.

At the end of the day it’s just a little more sitting and standing than they are used to. If anything, there’s a good chance athletes are more caught up on their school work with the extra travel time.
