25-10 KU for the sweep of Tulsa. Impressive performance and enviable depth for the Jayhawks.

It looks like Kirsch and Dalton are redshirting this year? KU stats still show Dalton with an appearance but understand this is an error. Kirsch has dressed for all the matches, but if she hasn't played yet I have to think she is redshirting.
Kenzie Dean and Reese Ptaceck saw action last night - I think both will be playing in future years.
YTD hitting stats: Elnady 3.53 .284 Bien 2.73 .305 Davis 2.63 .366 Onabanjo 3.07 .477 Burgess 1.78 .461
That is excellent balance and outstanding hitting % for their 5 hitters. It has been a while since they had this kind of offense from their middles.

Between McGehe/McCarthy/Devers we are deep anyway on DSs.

Ok had to take a few days from volleytalj after that tough Creighton game, but good game plan and execution by Creighton. They served extremely aggressive and KU couldn’t have their usual elite ball control and that make our hitters extremely average. I think I had said in this thread that I thought KU could go undefeated, but would probably get tripped up by Creighton, and that held. Especially with how strong is Creighton is this year, that is not a bad loss at all.
Also, my heart couldn’t take KU headed into the Big 12 season having won and then be in the legitimate running for a Top 4 Seed this season. Very reasonable to expect us to host a regional if we perform as expected in the Big 12. I request us not getting a 8 or 9 (or 16, obviously) and almost indefinitely going to Pitt (at this rate).

For the UCF game
- Elnady at times has looked tired this season. She went on a passing doozy at the end of Set 2 that is way below her usual standards. I think we should have Nelson play more in the back row through Big 12 play A. For Nelson’s experience and B. To save Elnady from fatigue.
- Nelson in the back row is literally like watching a supersized Ali Nelson. Crazy how similar they look and even move.
- It must be super frustrating to be UCF and hit .386 and .319 and still lose sets because KU is more efficient
- McGehe getting a key block touch at 29-29 was great. If you find highlights of her youth club play on YouTube, she has a similar skill set in Turner in that she played setter and hit - really glad she is getting a mainstay DS role this year
- It’s really annoying that this game was broadcast on ESPNU and they don’t have the commentators even go to the game - just give me JDH and Leif Leisec because it sounded like I was listening to the game on with AirPod Pro Noise Cancellation. Horjesi is one of the better environments in college volleyball and if I’m the Big 12 or Kansas, I care, because this might matter for a national recruits (and you can betcha the commentators are there for nationally televised SEC/ACC/Big Ten games).
- QOTW: Last game, Jill Dorsey-Hall said Caroline Bien has been in USAVB gym as a libero - how good do y’all think she could be as a pro libero? Bien reminds me a little bit of a poor man’s Megan Courtney (worse hitter/arguably better defensive potential though)?

Regarding the NCAA tournament, I recommend avoiding both Pitt and Nebraska.

According to the receiving stats posted by avid - Kansas serve receive against Creighton was good and better than Creighton. It seemed to me that Burns had a rough match. Also - I believe Bien only had 5 receive attempts all match. The major problem in that match was the Creighton defense at the net. The block and touches completely took Kansas hitters out of their game and they never recovered. There was no confidence by anyone hitting out with all the blocks and soft touches, so they were doing way too many tips and soft attacks. In contrast - Sis and Martin were making a living going high hands off of the Kansas block while mixing in kills hitting the floor. This was the first match where the block gave Kansas trouble. Last night against UCF (possibly the tallest team in D1) - Kansas had no problem moving the ball around and the offense was on fire the entire match. Now - I don't think UCF is a particularly good blocking team despite their outstanding size. At the same time - the Kansas block gets tooled way too often. There are occasions where the attack is going out, but they are getting a high hands touch, or where the ball goes past the back row defense on a touch. The back row defense has been so good. Hudson was killing Kansas with that sharp cross court spike until the 4th set when Burns did a better job of anticipating that shot and effectively took Purdue's offense out for the rest of the set. There was no adjustment with Creighton's hitting on Saturday.

Sunderland did the Olympic announcing remotely - just like last night. Having Sunderland prepare for a Kansas game and announce a Kansas game has way more value than a typical match on ESPN+. He will have a better sense of the Kansas players and what they are doing and this will be in his mind throughout the season when he is announcing other matches. This may not happen if he doesn't ever announce a KU game.

Ironically the places that KU’s season has ended in 2021 and 2022 are Nebraska and Pitt (though not at Petersen Events Center). Obviously, neither are ideal - but part of me likes the David vs. Goliath match-up in Devaney even for the sake of getting more regional and national eyeballs. I hope this is a problem we get to worry about though after the first two rounds.

KU came out on top of a dog fight 3-1 against Houston last night - probably could’ve gone 5 but there were some clutch plays by Bien in particular in Set 4. I wouldn’t say it was KU’s sharpest performance and there were just some uncharacteristic unforced hitting errors throughout the match and Houston was playing some great court defense. I’ll attribute some of this to 5 games in 9 days?
Outside of Pitt, I think there is much more parity in women’s college volleyball this year, so at this point, I’ll take going 2-0 for what it is and watch this team live on for another week in the Top 10.
Elnady has been trying to swing very hard off hands this whole season and with more physical blockers and hasn’t been all that successful in the last 3 games. Like I said before, she also just looks a little fatigued, but hopefully her hitting % can increase these next few games. Houston and UCF were going to be very familiar with her from last year, so I’m hoping Colorado, WVU, and Cincy will provide her an opportunity for her to get back in rhythm.
Bien - 14 digs and it seems like every game she has 1 or 2 insane defensive plays. She passed a 3.0 ball to Turner from her stomach this match that doesn’t even seem humanly possible.
