Good win. Rama was electric per usual. Sloane was fine and definitely more consistent than David. UCLA's middles have really turned up offensively recently. Now onto a slightly easier stretch of the season against Pepperdine, BYU, and USC before its rematches against OSU and PSU. In theory, UCLA could go around 7-1 in that stretch and be in very good position going into the "spring break" (not really for UCLA athletes).

GCU better not be the number 1! Why not ? They’ll probably only be there for a week as I think BYU will defeat them!

Does UCLA stay with Champlin as the libero going forward? There is no denying that the passing looked better.

Does UCLA stay with Champlin as the libero going forward? There is no denying that the passing looked better. The defense was very strong. He had 17 digs. It was the most by a UCLA player since 2016.

overall, both teams probably have a big of a sigh of relief with a 1-1 weekend
UCLA having 4 losses would have put them in a pretty tenuous situation. Beach needed to get a top 5 win, and did that
what a great pair of matches to see
1) Champlain (sic) has to be the player of the game, maybe of the season. it all starts with passing, and Champlain steady'd that back-row, and then as the match went on UCLA kept looking more like UCLA of last year, with the passing, digs - seemed it also translated into Rowan setting with better confidence
2) David looks just more plodding, almost like needs to lose 20 pounds. albeit his serve his fine
3) Beach serving to me was a bit perplexing late, UCLA handled tough serves fine. Varga, Sotiris, Towrie, didn't try their taking off something on their serves like Friday, but then they never got that hard serves to do enough to follow with pulling the string. Harlan didn't come thur when Beach needed some critical sub serves, like he did Friday. was begging for Knipe(s) to have Knipe go to his jump serve. Those floats of Knipe and Bouchkov latter part of match where doing nothing, lollipops for Champlain to take over and that UCLA was slamming down. why not have KNipe pull out his jump serving? chalk it up to stubborness
4) Knipe vs. Speraw. interesting Speraw's frequent changes vs. Knipe's steadfastnesss. on Friday, UCLA didn't have the formula, and nothing worked. Knipe's sticking with Varga paid off on Friday. on Saturday, Speraw looks like a magician with the changes, and sometimes I don't get why Knipe did just trying Herstynovitch for Varga for at least some stretch. I get he's trying to get Varga going after a year off and Friday paid off. Just Saturday was a bit of a nothing to lose game, and Varga started struggling a bit. give Varga credit his passing is solid
5) Godbold went from NPOY before the weekend to struggling key piece at times. Teams are gonna target him in back-row, and that's something Knipe has to deal with. Plus a number of critical attacking errors. Godbold was visibly frustrated some, with himself. His serving actually was improved over the weekend. just not sure how Beach deals with that, Godbold is a career 90% passer, not a 94% passer.
6) incredible rallies and four highlight reel saves didnt even win the respective team their points, lol. Champlain with that edge of sideline kick save, Rowan with that crazy side spin save to go over, then Beach's two scrambles both hitting the scoreboard to terminate the point against the Beach both times. I could swear UCLA had someone lowering the scoreboard when the ball was on the Beach's side. SInce Knipe was using challenges for time-outs all night, was hoping he'd use one to challenge the ball hitting the scoreboard, lol. that would have had as much chance as his other 'prayer/time-out' challenges.
7) maybe it was one game, just don't see how UCLA doesn't make Champlain permanent libero. Poor guy, he needs to shank balls on purpose now to try to get back an OH job. Not gonna be able to serve a ball again until after the season. Briggs and Champlain definitely were the price of admission.

Absolutely, Sloane had a great night coming in off the bench for David last night with 16 kills. Just 24 hours earlier, David had the team high with 15 kills in the first match against Long Beach
This may not be David’s best season so far, but he is still playing well. With 32 TAs the night before, I can understand why last night wasn’t his best.
Great that Speraw has options with OPP for the remainder of season.

I agree that David played well on Friday but with the way he's been playing this season, Friday was seemingly an anomaly.

Sloane definitely seems quicker and more agile, especially in backrow defense.
