That's the problem (for MN) with the pairings as they are. It's also why Minnesota fans would like to see Iowa get better as a team (not quite as good as MN, of course). Bite your hairy bumble tongue. No true Minnesotan would wish anything but the absolute worst for the teams from Iowa City. And vice versa.

Has it been a decade already? Cripes. How time flaps its tiny wings...

I thought MN looked better last night in terms of court demeanor. For the last few years the Gophers have been one of the most fun teams on the court. The look of sheer enjoyment and fun was easily seen on the player's faces. This year, except for the Nebraska match, I have not seen that. The Iowa match showed a little of that but still not like previous years. The team gives me the impression they are playing not to lose rather than playing to win. IMHO, that attitude is deadly.
And the coaching staff looks just as serious and glum.

It looks like they've got a good rhythm going with cumpston in for malama and both cumpston and florian are picking up the pieces from the left side -- now it will just take a few more matches to get into the groove, and I think we'll start seeing them behaving more like last year.. I'm just hoping they can get it all in motion before taking on Purdue on the road next weekend...

PA announcer -- I know his name, but it's not coming to me -- was having some fun with "RACHEL HARTMANN, RACHEL HARTMANN" last night. There was a smattering of laughter. I'm thinking maybe 2% of the crowd knows what he's talking about.
Can there be a smattering of laughter? I know about applause. To the dictionary!
smattering n The reaction, with laughter, to the PA announcer -- whatshisname -- saying "Rachel Hartmann, Rachel Hartmann" at a volleyball match.
Oh. OK then.

Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman.
ABC sitcom. Made some gay jokes. First time I saw Billy Crystal.
This was all in reruns, of course, as I am only 30 years old.

Rachel Hartmann, Rachel Hartmann was started last weekend by some longtime season ticket holders. The announcer picked up on it last night. Of course I had to ask what was so funny about it. You see, I am too young to have any idea. I was told it is a takeoff of some TV show in the 70's?

I don't know. They didn't have things solidified when they played NE. I think their attitude that match was that they didn't have anything to lose. No one thought they would give NE a match. Every other match I've watched they looked like they had a lot to lose. I have only seen that at home so I don't know if this is happening on the road also.
