linkfilms.nationalgeographic.com/free-soloI have a feeling there are a least a couple folks on here who found/would find this interesting. Honnold is incredibly fascinating, the epitome of what it means to be “super chill.” Can’t wait to read his book. Been binging on documentaries related to climbing the 8000m mountains lately. Wish I weren’t so afraid of heights. I believe there might be a 14,000’ peak in the US that isn’t too terribly exposed. Walking the ridge on the Matterhorn? I couldn’t do that for any price. Nope. Nope. Nope. Any other climbing enthusiasts?

I was like "Oh, Hope Solo got arrested again?" Sadly, a rational response.

I believe there might be a 14,000’ peak in the US that isn’t too terribly exposed. Pike's Peak has a *road* to the top it.... This movie is six years old now. It won Best Documentary in the year it came out. It is quite good. When I was younger I did a lot of mountain climbing. But I was never more than a mediocre rock climber. Most of what I did was class 3-4 scrambling and snow and glacier climbing.

Thinking about it, I wouldn't be shocked if pedestrians weren't allowed on the road although I know they allow cyclists.

Nope. Nope. Any other climbing enthusiasts? You can get very close to 14,000' in your car by driving to the observatories on Mauna Kea (13,803') It's a long, hard day hike from Whitney Portal to reach the top of Mt Whitney, highest point in the Continental US. (20.9 miles roundtrip, about 6200' elevation gain. Shorter but harder up the mountaineers route, 10.9 miles) If you really want to kill yourself, you can go from Badwater (282' below sea level) to Mt. Whitney in the same day. (random photo. Not me!)

Speaking of Free Solo, the producers also made another mountaineering film, "14 Peaks", about a Nepali aiming to break record as the fastest man to climb all the mountains higher than 8000m (26,247 feet), its another highly recommended film:

Mountaineering documentaries are almost their own genre Which reminds me -- the Banff Mountain Film Festival. Every year they put together a "Best Of" Tour.

Most of what I did was class 3-4 scrambling and snow and glacier climbing. This drivable peak is a little bit higher and I think there’s no entrance fee. Strike that. $10 for parking and I think it requires a reservation with a $2 fee. Apparently interagency passes work too, but require the reservation fee. It says that driving without parking at specific fee lots is otherwise free, but it would require a short hike to the top from a parking lot. www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/arp/recreation/recarea/?recid=28496&actid=50And it was recently renamed Mt Blue Sky because of controversy of Colorado Territory Governor John Evans and a massacre of natives that he ordered.

Alex Honnold was a civil engineering major at UC Berkeley for a year, but then dropped out. He said that he skipped classes so that he could go bouldering at Indian Rock Park. My kid took the stairs. I think it's still streaming on Disney+. www.disneyplus.com/movies/free-solo/3ibzvuU6iPlE
