49ers continue Big West travels

The Long Beach State women's volleyball team continues its travels when it visits UC Irvine tonight to face the Anteaters in a 7 o'clock Big West Conference match. The 49ers (11-4) split their conference-opening matches on the road last weekend, losing to UC Santa Barbara on Friday before knocking off Cal Poly San Luis Obispo the next evening.
Coach Brian Gimmillaro's team has played just four matches on campus this season.
"It's an unusual schedule," he said Wednesday afternoon before practice. "This is the first year that we haven't packed the schedule with a lot of home matches early. But that's just the way it falls and it means we'll have a lot of matches at home (down the stretch)."
The 49ers are at Cal State Northridge on Friday night, meaning seven of their final 10 conference matches will be played in the Walter Pyramid.
And they close the regular season with three nonconference matches in the Walter Pyramid during the Baden Thanksgiving Classic (Nov. 25-26).
The Anteaters are 0-2 in conference (after being swept
in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara last weekend) and 6-9 overall.
They lost several key members of last season's team due to graduation, the most notable of those being Kelly Wing, the 2004 Big West Player of the Year.
Long Beach could be at something less than full strength for tonight's match.
Freshman setter Nicole Vargas (left wrist) and hitters Rosie Lewis (knee) and Mariko Crum (back) have missed practice time this week with various aches and pains, Gimmillaro said, and their status for tonight was still undetermined before Wednesday afternoon's practice.
"But Dyanne (Lawlor) has been doing the setting in practice, and Robin (Miramontes) and Quincy (Verdin) have filled in well for Mariko and Rosie," he added.
