Interesting conversation in a the coaches poll thread about NPOY. Figured I create a thread and pose a question worth discussion.
A libero has never won National Player of the Year or a conference player of the year award (excluding the conferences that do DPOY and OPOY).
We’ve had some great liberos the last 10 years from Erik Shoji to Mason Briggs. However, they are often omitted from NPOY consideration because they are liberos and don’t put up offensive numbers.
What type of resume or scenario would be needed for a libero to win National Player of the Year?

Hmmm this is a great question, vinnielopes. It'd be hard to do it based on stats because liberos (other than Briggs) don't typically have consistent matches where they put up double-digit digs. But there is no other stat-based metric to judge them on other than passing. I think the voting committee would have to use the eye-test to an even greater level to see that team's libero not only provides passing/defense, but also provides great leadership, second touch, and is the biggest factor in why that team is as deep as they are in the NCAA tournament. In my mind, if LBSU makes it to the national championship, there is no bigger player on that team than Briggs and he deserves it. |

in hindsight, maybe Troy Gooch shouldve been the the NCAA Tournament MVP and MPSF NPOY Definitely should've been tournament MVP. Knight was great in the championship match but so was Norris. Gooch was solid all tournament. |

in hindsight, maybe Troy Gooch shouldve been the the NCAA Tournament MVP and MPSF NPOY Definitely should've been tournament MVP. Knight was great in the championship match but so was Norris. Gooch was solid all tournament. Maybe an award for Most Integral Player of Last Year. Front-runners would be Gooch and Sani.
This would only be obvious for teams who lost 1 or 2 key players tho.

in hindsight, maybe Troy Gooch shouldve been the the NCAA Tournament MVP and MPSF NPOY I will say that UCLA wouldn’t have won 🏆 last year without Gooch. It’s even more obvious this year with their inability to have a consistent L in their line up. |

It is hard when you only play one side - defense. No blocking, serving, or attacking. OH plays both offense and defense. The setter has such a pivotal role. The libero is key however, the position is limited to one aspect of the game.

I think Merk might have a shot at EIVA NPOPY, but Big West is a bit too stacked (Clark, Spyros, & Hilir) for Mason to get much NPOY conversation for that conference, even if he deserves it. The two best players in the EIVA this year are a lib (Merk) and a middle (Ezeonu). The award will probably go to a setter or pin though. |

I would think serve receive would be the first stat that is checked, but I don't see that as a stat being reported (other than reception errors).
Gooch was someone I didn't really appreciate until be graduated. He has had an amazing rookie season so far.

I can see them winning again this year if they can somehow finally find that “libero” player in their roster who can consistently perform. |
