Plus Spectrum's broadcasts of the UH games are an enormous production for each game. Kanoa and CMac and the 3 other commentators in the corner crew come prepared with tons of background stories on the opponents and there's a bunch of cameramen/production staff around the court. there's also all the other UH games on Wednesday and Saturday that the Spectrum crew is already scheduled for. if Spectrum's broadcasts were some janky single cameraman with two student commentators that have no knowledge of the opposing team, then i think they would be fair game to be criticized. but that's not the case at all To add in to the over-programmed weekend Hawaii Beach VB is also hosting Boise St., Chaminade, Pepperdine, Nebraska, & St. Mary's on Queen's Beach for the Heineken Queen's Cup. I'm sure traffic will be at an all-time high! Add the Honolulu Festival to the mix lol

I don't like seeing NONE in the TV LINKS column... www.youtube.com/live/wDhc7C-vLiM?feature=sharedCharlie talks about this starting @39:16. And tbh Charlie as Blunt as he was is absolutely correct. It's not Hawaii's responsibility to live stream other teams games if it doesn't include Hawaii. Hawaii spends the money and makes the arrangements when they are off the rock (if Hawaii specific matches cant be viewed anywhere) to invest into Hawaii matches because that's what their fans want. Those teams don't help with anything other than giving the greenlight for Spectrum to stream the matches. If said programs believe in investing in their teams and ensuring their own fanbases can view games....then that should be on their programs and athletic depts to make the arrangements themselves with UH. I remember last year when people said UH SHOULD be streaming all the matches at the Outrigger. Lol (Not you specifically Rob but others on that post). And I remember saying something to the effect like Hawaii shouldn't be doing ANYTHING that doesn't include their team in the match. Lol That's on those programs and if they believe in the value of showing those matches to their fans and the public then they need to make the necessary arrangements to get it out there. They have months and months in advance knowing their matches that doesn't include UH....isn't streamed anywhere. This isn't new information or a shock to these teams. So Hawaii rightfully needs to continue to put the onus on THEM! That's why I chuckled last year when fans on this site was blaming UH for not showing non Hawaii matches live. Like wtf, that's not our AD'S job to put that on! That's those programs job to make things happen! You see value in the match then set up a damn camera stream! Stop scapegoating our program because we actually spend the thousands of dollars to stream our matches off the rock. People talk about growing the game....well some of these programs need to stop being lazy and use their resources or put up a camera phone or something! It's not hard. Sounds like Lewis MVB is making arrangements to post a live stream on their FB page. Great! Every team should be doing that and not depending on any team including Hawaii to be doing what is essentially their own job to cater to their specific fan bases. * can't LOL sorry can't help myself 🤣

Being on the broadcast side of things I know it takes financial resources, staff, etc. I'm just bummed because selfishly, I can't put my own eyes on the matches to break them down. But hey, that's the volley-nerd in me and I will survive. And I know your response is not directed toward me. If I were a media-mogul with a half-million $ extra hanging around I would ask for the rights, connect VolleyballTV, and stream it (at little or no cost). The reality of it is it requires $$$. The additional reality is most VB institutions' Admin's are struggling to stay afloat in this economy so I truly understand the struggle. Add in the inequity (not making it even a top-10 priority) of coverage of the Men's vs. Women's (which is another issue) it is just a HUGE challenge. I'll survive with livestats but hope I'll be consoled by an undefeated weekend for my team (which shall not be named), HINT: their mascot has an "S" in their name Stoked that Lewis is Facebook Living the match, but I'm wondering how they're going to manage to do that-- especially since my peeps there have said that Spectrum has exclusive rights to any athletic events in the STAN. I made contact with "someone" last year who offered to IG/FB/YouTube the matches and they were kindly asked not to from venue staff (i.e. they were harshly reprimanded). I'll be watching all the Hawaii matches without a doubt on ESPN+ from my locale, but if "anyone" decided to potentially IG/FB/YouTube the other matches, I would "not" approve of that and you should "not" DM me your handle/FB/YouTube. Let's keep making Men's VB exponentially expand! Thanks Rob! Yeah I have to assume maybe they found acceptance because we also have a new AD that just came on board recently. Possibly found a way perhaps to work with Spectrum maybe with this new Athletic Director. Can't confirm that but that's the one big change in the operations of the UHAD.

I don't like seeing NONE in the TV LINKS column... It’s honestly a shame and something should be done about it in the future. This on its face is looking like the premier Mens College Volleyball tournament of the season and should be treated as such.

Possibly found a way perhaps to work with Spectrum maybe with this new Athletic Director. Can't confirm that but that's the one big change in the operations of the UHAD. Maybe it’s as simple as asking. Maybe last year the streamer on his/her own just streamed it. This year, people from the Lewis side asked and was granted permission. I’m going to assume if permission is given that Lewis will be able to put a stationery camera somewhere as opposed to having someone hold the camera for the entire match. I’m not sure why Spectrum would have any issue letting other teams stream their own matches . Spectrum is not televising it anyway so there shouldn’t be much of an issue. Spectrum does have a contract with UH and has rights to all their events. They also have the rights to all high school events that takes place in the SSC. When two teams not UH play there, I do wonder about that. I guess Lewis being part of the Outrigger and Spectrum has the rights. When the Los Angeles Clipper played in an exhibition at the SSC, I’m not certain if they had the rights to that game so Spectrum having rights to all athletics events at the SSC might not be true. All UH /Hawaii High School events….yes but not all events.

ROCK VB was any paperwork involved when you got the clearance? I emailed Troy Yamamoto. His response was: “ Spectrum will allow you to stream non UH matches to your schools/team's social media platforms. Please set up in the baseline without obstructing any fans or operations and TV crews.”

I am just a Lewis parent and I do livestreams for fall preseason stuff, and I have also live-streamed matches during the season when there is no livestream available. I also do some play-by-play for some Lewis home games, so hopefully it’s not too cringy to listen to me. The coaching staff has entrusted me to run livestreams through the team’s FB account. I try to provide some modest play-by-play and I also try to do some research ahead-of-time. For my gear, I only packed a monopod for this Hawaii trip and I’ll use an old iPhone that I’m hoping to connect into the SSC WiFi.

Otherwise we would not be able to watch these 2 matches! Really appreciate it

But ask Coach Dan Friend if he can reach out to Charlie and Rich Sheriff (arena manager and son of the late Stan Sheriff) and ask them to help you with that stable wifi. They have it free for all arena patrons but they only turn it on for a few hours in the evening during a UH match. Maybe they can have you use the arena staff wifi and not the free fan option so it's more stable connection for your stream.
