Final Stats
MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's volleyball team was 39-1 all-time against San Francisco and had won the last 23 meetings between the two teams, until tonight. The Waves struck early, and often, to extend its win streak over the Dons to 24 consecutive matches with a dominating 3-0 (30-25, 30-16, 30-15) sweep Friday night at War Memorial Gym in San Francisco, Calif.
Junior MB Sophia Milo was unstoppable in the middle finishing the night with a match-leading 16 kills, eight blocks and 20.5 points. Milo was not the only one clicking on all cylinders for the Waves on the night. Five different Pepperdine players hit .300 or better for the match. Lecca Roberts had six kills on 10 swings (.500) with four blocks, Katy Daly turned in 12 kills on 22 attempts (.409) with three blocks and Julie Rubenstein connected on 12 of 23 tries (.348) with a pair of blocks. As a team, Pepperdine (9-6, 2-1 WCC) hit .488 to San Francisco's (12-5, 0-2 WCC) .071, including minus .065 in the final game, and out blocked the Dons by a 13.5-2.0 count.
USF's KeLicia Shorts was one of the few bright spots for the Dons as her nine kills led the team and she hit at a .538 clip. No other player was able to reach more than six kills as USF used 14 players in the contest.
Pepperdine exploded out of the gate in game one in taking a 6-1 lead, forcing San Francisco head coach Jeff Nelson to burn a quick timeout. The Waves continued to hit at a torrid pace and would extend its lead to seven at 22-15. But the Dons would make a run at Pepperdine as the Waves committed a pair of attack errors to set USF off on a 5-0 run. The Pepperdine advantage remained at two as the two teams traded the next eight points until Milo recorded three consecutive kills and capped off the game and a 4-1 Waves' run with a fourth to give Pepperdine a 1-0 lead in the game. For the game, Pepperdine hit at a .520 clip, USF hit just .156.
Game two picked up right were the first ended as Pepperdine got out to an early 5-1 lead. Leading 6-4, the Waves went on runs of 4-1 and 5-1 to take complete control of the game and a 10-point 15-5 lead. A Breegan Mulligan service ace pushed the lead to 14, 24-10 and Pepperdine headed into the intermission with a two-games-to-none advantage.
There was no let-up in Pepperdine in game three as with the score knotted at 3-3, the Waves went on a 4-0 run. After a USF kill, Kristin Hasselberg's service error was the beginning of what would be a nine-point Pepperdine explosion. The only thing which didn't go the Waves' way Friday night came on the next-to-last point of the game. Hitting .941 for the night, Milo was blocked on a slide attempt dropping her hitting percentage to .833 preserving the 18-year-old school record of .857 established by Barbara Blizzard on Oct. 28, 1988.
Pepperdine will complete its two-match WCC road trip tomorrow night when it takes on Saint Mary's at 7 p.m. (PT). Fans not able to attend the match can follow all the action via CSTV Online's GameTracker feature.
