If I recall it was called on Jost. That was a different double-contact call. The Van Ryk one was at an awful time. It's just a little surprising to me as I feel like the FIVB has been letting everything go. I've seen some egregious contacts on the men's side especially. Yes, for sure they haven't been calling doubles very often previously.

but wasnt the double by Van Ryk much more clearly a double than the one on Jost? Not in my opinion. Jost's was also going over the net to the other side (her's was the third contact). just found it. It wasnt going over. It was second contact attempting to set KVR (it was a terrible set and an obvious double call)

When it comes to doubles, they are calling them on women’s teams much more than men’s. Some of these men’s teams butcher the ball and it’s okay. But tbh it sucks to have it called on you at 24 all, but I know I would want it called if it was the other way around too

It's not egregiously bad (neither was Gray's against Serbia, though we had a less good look against that one). It's less about the spin and more about the contact to me. But most importantly, it's best to be consistent. If it's a tight match - then be tight on all doubles and throws. If it's not, stay consistent. I guess more and more everyday I'm becoming sympathetic to the new NCAA rule due to inconsistent officiating.

Unless the rule changed after Week 2 of VNLs, it's something that is still very subjectively enforced. I maintain that it would make a LOT of sense to be extremely strict in the leadup to the Olympics to scare teams away from pushing the limits, then to back off when you get there to produce the best product in Paris. Did you or trollhunter catch the double contact call at 24 all in the 1st set of the Canada-Netherlands game? What do you think about it? My first impression was it's a double contact, but the ref was a little late calling it. I went back and watched it again on VolleyMetrics in slow motion (and game speed again). The setter did something unorthodox with her left hand, asymetrical to her right hand. Rotated her left hand like a cut shot as her right hand did a more normal setting "superman" follow-thru. The resulting set was about 10 feet off, 10 feet in (3M x 3M) and helicoptering sideways as it drifted off the net from a tight pass. If you don't call that set, you can't call anything in my book (ala NCAA this year). Just wish the ref would have whistled it a second earlier.

I'd call that double on KVR every single time. The only reason I'm a bit annoyed about is they let a very similar one go on the dutch (a lift non-call). Both hilariously ugly hand contact, one was called and the other was not.
I also agree with trollhunter above. Dutch coach and bench were way more demonstrative and vocal and almost willed the ref to call it.

netherlands men had a similar situation last week as they were chasing an olympic spot. Nimir whined about it and then “got injured” in a close game with France that wouldve put them in a good spot if they won.
