I was having an argument about beach volleyball rules with a random person on the internet, as one does. Section 13.2 of the FIVB rule book defines conditions under which an attack hit is considered a fault. These include: Everyone knows you can attack with a hand set as long as it is "square"; in fact, rule 13.2.5 seems to exist specifically to define and require the "square" characteristic of the hand set attack. But it seems like rule 13.2.3 should disallow a hand set attack. What am I missing? My guess is a hand set is not considered an "open-handed finger action", so this rule doesn't apply. In that case, what is meant by this phrase?
Side note: this rule book is surprisingly sloppily written, considering its intended purpose.

That is referring to what we called an "Open Hand Dink" back in the day... If you are going to attack, you have to have a cobra, knuckles, etc...

All the rulebooks are worded atrociously, it's like a fourth grader tried to copy wording they saw in what they thought were "serious documents" while not totally understanding the sport of volleyball.
