A 20 year old student who is also highly compensated athlete in college volleyball's most famous program. There are plenty of well-paid 20 year olds answering tougher questions than "tell us about how your teammates support you." So her forte is not press conferences. But she is a very good volleyball player. How is the money she makes relative to this discussion? You described her as a student. I'm pointing out that she is not just a student, she's effectively a professional athlete playing for one of the most popular sports teams in the state of Nebraska. If it was some biology major who got picked up for DUI and then shoplifting in the space of a few weeks nobody would care and there wouldn't be reporters asking them questions about it during a class presentation.

This thread was reactivated by persons critical of Harper. In this reactivated thread there is more criticism of Harper, a 20 year old student, than the reporter, a grown professional. What did the reporter do that should be criticized? Absolutely nothing.

So why did you say this? If it was not "an inappropriate question", and if it was "asked in a sensitive way", then why should there be any criticism of the reporter? Just noting fact. Personally I don't care if the reporter was criticized. My point is: why the criticism of Harper for not answering a question. Again she is a much better at playing volleyball at this point in her career than she is at interviews IMO. Her main focus should be on volleyball, but I am sure she will also improve at press conferences too. If not, and she continues to improve at VB, I, as a NE VB fan, don't see it as a critical flaw. Being criticized for NOT answering a question at a press conference? Why bother going in the first place? Allow that OPPORTUNITY for a teammate who is willing to actually answer questions at a press conference and just stay home. If she was forced to attend, then shame on Cook.

Since someone had already brought up a tennis athlete, I’d also like to point out that Martina Hingis (at the time around the same age as Harper is now) had a complete meltdown at one of the biggest tennis stages, the French Open. Hingis was already ranked #1, a well compensated multi-millionaire, a professional for years with a team of other professionals highly regarded in their field. My point is, even a seasoned professional athlete at the top of their sport can fumble during a high pressure moment. Ya’ll are over-reacting to a 19 year old NIL-compensated college athlete’s inability to answer a reporter’s question in a way that YOU wanted her to reply. “Get her some media training” you say? Okay sure, let’s do that. Done. Move on. No pun intended, but let’s quit harping on this.

Move one. No pun intended, but let’s quit harping on this. VT will be chewing on this long after Harper has graduated. Elephants have shorter memories.

We all just want Lexi to be happy I’m glad someone has spoken out about ugly, unwanted player nicknames from Volleytalk. Some of you are actually really bad at this. Looking at you Wisconsin fans, Fuerbs is a hideous invention. Uhh, Wisconsin fans didn't come up with that. It's the nickname that her father has had as a coach for the USMNT for years

Okay sure, let’s do that. Done. Move on. No pun intended, but let’s quit harping on this. Just so we're clear, this was NOT a "high pressure moment" this was the most predictable situation in history. It was a softball question lobbed over the plate by a friendly journalist attempting to tee her up to make her teammates look good, show her maturity in moving past the situation, and give an opening to parley this into team bonding as strength moving into the new season. If the staff and PR team didn't prep her for this possibility in advance, then that is a massive failure on their part. And if she can't handle even the most basic questioning about a very public event, especially those that are designed to make her look good, her volleyball prowess isn't going to compensate for her inability to present herself well. She's had 5 months to figure things out, and yet, here we are. However, for context, this is the same community and sports culture that gave us Tom Osborne and the "I don't care if the guys were beating their girlfriends or driving drunk, as long as they play football good" and the Lauren Cook hit-and-run debacle. So the responses and permissive attitude about this are unsurprising.

With all due respect, you weren’t the one in the press conference in front of reporters. You’re in front of a computer screen and keyboard with no one looking. ETA: I absolutely agree with a lot of what you said, esp about the staff and PR team part. Idk, again, maybe they did prep her and she couldn’t execute the plans.

I've been in plenty of press conferences for a variety of reasons: preseason, post-season, Final Four- both the winning and losing side, as both an athlete and a coach. So, I do have personal experience. These are genuinely not pressure cooker situations. Especially not preseason press conferences in front of friendly press.

Oh sweet summer child, I'm nowhere near a boomer. The entire point is a friendly press conference in front of local press is hardly the difficult situation you are making it out to be. And if it is, then they never should have put her out there. But, unless they are planning to never let her speak to the press ever again, she has to be able to handle the easiest question possible on the subject.
