isn’t Nebraska just a classy institution? Between Reyes/Hunter, Cook, and now Murray they’re blazing a new trail. Even if it is zigzagged and underaged

Volleyball rumor mill amongst players says she flipped off the police officer, hence the disturbing the peace officer charge… That is considered protected speech and will be dismissed if that was it. Per Husker Illustrated article "She failed to comply with multiple officer directives during the stop, according to the police report, and was charged with obstruction of a peace officer."

That's nonsense. That's not protected speech when you're in the custody of an officer. That has been adjudicated by the Supreme Court as 1A. Feel free to fact check =) I highly doubt flipping the cop off lead to the obstruction charge anyways as that's not obstructing anything. I suspect it might have something to do with the fake ID or misleading officers in the information she gave them. That charge is the one that throws me off the most because it must have been a volatile interaction at some level when she was pulled over. Overall really really disappointing...

Perhaps it was officer Phillips that pulled her over. ok I’ll stop.

Flipping off a cop isn't illegal, and absent other factors, is considered protected speech (for example, if a cop drives by, or if someone drives by a cop, and someone flips the bird). But once a person is stopped by an officer, they must comply with lawful orders, or they may be subject to detention or arrest.

Right, the obstruction charge must have come from a more volatile interaction like I said. Cops are used to wayyyy worse than a middle finger lol

LPD bodycam footage could be problematic. I really would love to watch that body cam footage. I already have tons of dui body cams pop up on my for you page on TikTok, seeing Harper’s would show exactly what went down

For what it’s worth, another power 5 volleyball player was arrested for a DUI a couple years ago and the body cam went public. She started the season opener that fall.

Sounds familiar, but I can’t think of anything

I think we enjoy finding things to get outraged about. I do, anyway. But whether Harper Murray faces any kind of team suspension is not on my radar. She made a mistake. I'm hopeful and expectant that the justice system will have some consequences for her. I don't think she'll have any more leniency provided to her than any other well to do teen/early 20s young attractive female first offender would. It's not all about being a prominent athlete at the local college. There are benefits I've received throughout my life for having means that someone who is living paycheck to paycheck simply isn't provided. As far as I'm concerned this is something that can easily be handled internally without any public facing consequence in terms of her participation on the volleyball team and it wouldn't be some kind of egregious coddling on Nebraska volleyball's part. But that's only my opinion. One of the things I love about volleytalk specifically and message boards in general is reading other people's takes, even when I strongly disagree with them. Oftentimes especially when I strongly disagree with them.
