For the first time EVER, more tuned in to watch the women's championship than the mens In the 42 years of the tournament, it marks a momentous occasion for the sport The total number of viewers for Sunday’s women’s national championship game between South Carolina and Iowa was 18.9 million, peaking at 24.1 million in the game’s final 15 minutes, according to Nielsen. It was the most-watched women’s college basketball game ever and doubled the previous year’s 9.9 million viewers. On Monday, Connecticut’s victory over Purdue in the men’s final drew 14.8 million viewers, Nielsen said. That was up a smidge from the 14.7 million who watched last year’s men’s championship game, but fell 4 million viewers short of the women’s final. As previously mentioned in other threads the women final outrated every 2023 World Series game and every NBA finals game from last year more perspective on the numbers women's final was on ABC at 3PM mens final was on CBS at 9:20PM no primetime for the women's www.npr.org/2024/04/10/1243801501/womens-ncaa-championship-tv-ratingswww.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/39908790/ncaa-men-basketball-final-ratings-fall-short-womensWomens Sports >

This is fantastic and I'm happy to see it, BUT the question remains; Is this a sign of things to come or an outlier because of "you know who"? This year's success was set up because of a controversial moment from last year's final.

so excited for women's sports to continue growing and receiving the love we have been neglected of for decades-gives the little girls something to look up to and forward to.

Not all, but part of it could be that the women’s championship was available on ABC, ESPN, and ESPN+. The mens’s final was only on TBS. Of course it’s still more than last year when the men’s national championship game was on CBS, but that wasn’t a marquee matchup.

This year's success was set up because of a controversial moment from last year's final. I also think still having Paige Bueckers lead UConn and JuJu Watkins being a star freshman and dropping 51 points on *Stanford* help, even if marginally, with the growth. They were more reason to tune in and pay attention to WBB, even if the overwhelming majority of these numbers are attributed to Caitlin Clark/Iowa Angel Reese/LSU, and South Carolina as well being dominant yet again. There was a lot of very good basketball at the top and pretty much every team had a story-line. But with Cardoso, Clark, and Reese all gone... have to worry about next year for sure. South Carolina might dominate again next year.

I may be missing it, but I didn't see the same type of high-profile exposure for Bueckers as I did for Clark or Reese. The commercial Ju-Ju was in seemed to play during every commercial break. So that's a positive. The NCAA will have to continue to make these athletes "stars" in order to keep the momentum rolling. imo

She's had Gatorade and Nike deals since NIL passed! From where I'm sitting, the NCAA had zero to do with making any of these women stars.

Like I said, I may have missed them. Fair point.

Hey, basketball is catching up to volleyball - where, forever, the women's game outdraws the men.

The title of this thread is a bit misleading. The women's championship game outdrew the men's championship game. For all of March Madness, the women's tournament averaged 2.2 million viewers. The men averaged 9.9 million.

They very well could, but I think UConn has the firepower if they stay healthy. Big if, but still.

This is fantastic but here is what bugs me. Why in the world they have it early afternoon. That’s a really fantastic number considering. And then they had the men’s late at night?Given the numbers why would they do that?

I also got a kick out of Staley. She is a great personality. She reminds me of Carla Tortelli and just as entertaining
