Beach is in the NCAA tournament. Even if they lose in the Big West tournament they have the resume for the at large. i concur. The 2 teams guaranteed to get an at-large if they dont win their conferences are Long Beach and Ucla. So Hawaii should hope Ucla wins the mpsf.

I mean Shewie had no choice but to leave if he wanted to set his last year. But super happy for him and so is his old team. He is def no frills but consistent. He shows us why at one point in his young career at UH in 2020 before the pandemic that he was starting over last years NPOY Thelle at setter before Thelle emerged as the one . the real reason he left was that he wanted to grow out his beard and was tired of Charlie's clean shaven rule lol Agree! But how do you explain Voss being 2nd Team All Lumberjack this year? 😀

That was about as bad as I have seen Briggs & Varga play. Credit to UCI's service pressure (especially Henno & Grigoriev), but Briggs almost had as many receiving errors (2) as he had digs (3). Anyone have any ideas why Godbold came in at opposite instead of OH? While Godbold can hit either side, Varga seems much more comfortable on the right side, even if he's a passing oppo. If Knipe wants Godbold on the right, I hope they use Harlan as the OH2 instead. sometimes Knipe's subs are head-scratchers. Varga plays poor, so he subs in Godbold for Harlan. go figure. like what issue did that fix last night. Knipe has pretty much boxed himself into always having Varga in all the time and no other option, where as he can interchange Siapanis, Godbold, Harlan if one is off. Varga has played so well since Februaray so not an issue. last night was different Beach was simply passive receiving from the start, can't get aced like that, just watchiing balls wizz by, credit IRvine, if they can consistently serve that well, they can beat anybody.

I just don't know if UCI can string 2 good matches in a row vs. quality teams. Just look at the Outrigger-- def. GCU, lose to Lewis, Lose to Hawaii

This should put to rest the argument that Tangutur should be playing instead of a lineup with Flexen, D'Arcy, and Henno. Irvine is just ridiculous when these guys are all in and healthy, then you add in Grigoriev. I don’t think anyone ever was making an argument for Tangutur. Flexen is just a very noticeably awful passer, but his offense makes up for it

If UCLA doesn’t win the conference tournament Hawaii will need to win the Big West to get in. Especially if Irvine wins tonight.

Flexen is just a very noticeably awful passer, but his offense makes up for it Irvine can win a lot of matches and did with Tangutur on the floor. When the UCI middles are playing like they did last night and Henno and Darcy are on, do you need more offense or is a roll player like Tangutur better for the flow to stabilize a team that sends more pressure back if an opponent is able to generate more of a response than LB was. Ever heard the phase, the mens game is won with serve and pass? Tangutur is better at both than Flexen. Last night LB played poorly and UCI played great. If UCI can play like that, they will be hard to stop but it has been a long season and Flexen, Darcy and the middles haven't shown up to every match. They have a tendency to play a poor match every other or third one. Tonight will be telling...

Getting the ball in a good position for Sheward to have options is key.

Y'all Flexen had 5 kills in 3 sets, hit .133, and was aced 2x. That doesn't account for his bad passes/overpasses.
I think he's a great player with some nice upside with more consistent playing time, but UCI didn't win because of him last night. He was a great outlet on some tough OOS swings, but like others have said, Tangatur (currently) offers a lot more to help UCI get more offense from the middles and get D'Arcy in-system swings.
I will say Flexen offers a sizeable block, though.
Let's see how they play once Knipe has had a chance to attack their weaknesses, as he often (and successfully) does in the rematch.

GCU, lose to Lewis, Lose to Hawaii While I agree with 90% of this, I want to note that in the Hawaii match, UCI lost 13-15 in the 5th and made it that far without a true OPP on the floor, their offensive OH2 also out with injury, and two undersized setters playing right side. I'd say that was a good match for them considering their available personnel.
