True freshmen like 17-19 years of age fresh from HS or 20-21 overseas first year in college freshmen? Or both?

If a Libero is needed, I nominate Chris Karnezis from CSUN who took over the job in conference play. He did a great job for the Matadors.
And he was a true freshman.
