I have a 30+ year old refrigerator in my pool house that still works. Don't make em like they used to. After months of silence, NASA has reestablished contact with Voyager 1, the furthest human-made object at 15.1 billion miles away. Launched in 1977, both Voyager probes continue to exceed their life expectations, exploring the depths of interstellar space. Voyager 1*: The most distant human-made object, launched by NASA in 1977. - *Mission*: Explore Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune before heading into interstellar space. - *Achievements*: - Discovered a thin ring around Jupiter and two new Jovian moons: Thebe and Metis. - Found five new moons and a new ring called the G-ring at Saturn. - First spacecraft to cross the heliosphere and enter interstellar space. - *Current Status*: Voyager 1 is the farthest object created by humans, moving at 38,000 mph (17.0 kilometers/second) relative to the Sun. So awesome. NASA’s Voyager 1 Resumes Sending Engineering Updates to Earth www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/nasas-voyager-1-resumes-sending-engineering-updates-to-earth

It was apparently a difficult fix. One of the chips had gone bad, so they needed to find unused processing power elsewhere onboard, reprogram that reclaimed space to run the code on the bad chip, and then route the data through the new code instead of the bad chip.

This is too amazing to let languish, so I will pop it back on top.

OP just wants us to know he has a pool house. With colder beer than my 3 year old expensive kitchen refrigerator that already had to be fixed once. Btw I didn't know about the rerouting of the chip....that is wild.

With my ridiculous electric rates, your old refrigerator could cost me $300 to $400 more per year to run than my new fridge.

If only they would manufacture an efficient fridge that would last as long as the Voyager probes. They have run for 47 years with <475 watts of power to stay warm enough to operate. Anyone up for Plutonium in their Kitchen?
