kiyoat - can I convince to come back to voting for Summit League POWs? Sure, I can try to be consistent with it (although I'm often not). Send me a reminder if you don't mind.

Sorry for not making a game thread this week, but I thought I 'd share my research/analysis anyway. Here's a hitter% comparison of the two teams, overall stats, conference only and last 2 matches. The idea being to see how they are improving or backsliding over time..... For evaluating hitting% by position, I'm using this metric (found in a response on an old VT thread...no idea if it's accurate) position | below ave. | average | good | great | OH | <200 | 200-250 | 250-300 | >300 | OPP | <230 | 230-270 | 270-320 | >320 | MB | <280 | 280-320 | 320-360 | >360 | Set | <200 | 200-300 | 300-400 | >400 |
Coyote Hitters (min 100 attempts on season)
| player | All | Conf. | last 2 | OH | L Medeck | .155
| .142 | .284 | OH | K Sealock | .225 | .212 | .205 | OPP | C Hlady | .220 | .149 | .033 | MB | M Bode | .274 | .263 | .354 | MB | A Nelson | .238 | .264 | .000 | OH | S Laird | .159 | .155 | .182 | S | A Van Hook | .322 | .333 | .409 | MB | A Loschen | .306 | .361 | .415 |
| TEAM | .222 | .213 | .227 |
Freshmen bounce back:Medeck and Bode had a shaky start to conference play, but lately have been hitting at a very high level, showing that potential! Sophomore growth:Van Hook and Loschen have steadily been increasing efficiency all season, and are currently our best hitters by% ! Steady Senior:Sealock has been very consistent all season, and has shown an ability to take over a set when needed. Jacks Hitters (min 100 attempts on season)
| player | All | Conf. | last 2 | OH | S Zgonc | .253
| .210 | .216 | OH | K Van Egdom | .104 | .107 | .140 | MB | S Schetnan | .449 | .483 | .348 | MB | M Burr | .323 | .438 | .452 | OPP | A Groves | .136 | .095 | .074 | MB | A V-Brown | .155 | .091 | -.214 |
| TEAM | .249 | .258 | .249 |
So overall, I'd say there are fewer hitters getting more attempts than with the Yotes. Zgonc gets the lion's share of attempts, and she seems to be a consistent hitter, similar to Sealock on USD. Schetnan and Burr both hit very, very efficiently, although Schetnan's numbers seem to have gone down just a little in recent matches. The other hitters are below-average offensively, although without watching them I don't know if that is due to being out-of-system? As a team, they hit a little better than USD, mainly because of their Starting Middles, I think.

Just did a hitting analysis on Denver, the Yotes' next opponent... they are not the same team we saw at the beginning of conference play! position | below ave. | average | good | great | OH | <200 | 200-250 | 250-300 | >300 | OPP | <230 | 230-270 | 270-320 | >320 | MB | <280 | 280-320 | 320-360 | >360 | Set | <200 | 200-300 | 300-400 | >400 |
Denver Hitters (Minimum 100 attempts on season)
| player | All | Conf. | last 3 | OH | C Davis | .240
| .289 | .267 | MB | M Mirabelli | .339 | .358 | .580 | OH | A Reynolds | .123 | .096 | .108 | OPP | G Lewis | .135 | .071 | DNP | OH | J Johnson | .243 | .324 | .310 | S | B Decker | .203 | .284 | .385 | MB | K Perryman | .170 | .180 | .286 |
| TEAM | .215 | .233 | .293 |
wow. As a team they have gotten gradually better on offense all season, and all four of Davis, Mirabelli, Johnson and the Setter Decker have lately been hitting at a very high level. I'll guess that Decker has been a big part of the improved hitting across the board. Mirabelli is going to be a challenge to defend, so I'm glad we just played Schetnan!

Just did a hitting analysis on Denver, the Yotes' next opponent... they are not the same team we saw at the beginning of conference play! One thing to keep in mind though is that among Denver's last three matches, two have been against bottom feeders KC and Oral Roberts.

Although "per set" stats aren't as good as "per attempt" stats... we are at the halfway point of conference play, so at least everyone has played everyone. The stats should be pretty fair. One key matchup for today: Denver Serve vs USD Recieve1. Denver is the best serving team in the conference in terms of Aces/set. They are getting 1.84 Aces/Set (in conference play), lead by: ...............0.50 from OH Ava Reynolds (#2 Summit) ...............0.44 from S ..Briley Decker (#4 Summit) ...............0.34 from OH Cassie Davis (#12 Summit) 2. USD is the best serve-receive team in the conference in terms of preventing aces. We are only allowing 1.03 Aces/Set (in conference play). Here's our main serve-receive crew with conference only stats: pos | player | Sets Played | Errors | Attempts | Reception% | OH | L Medeck | 32 | 2 | 130 | .985** | DS | A Wolff | 32 | 5 | 127 | .961 | DS/L | K Farris | 32 | 4 | 116 | .966 | DS | C Hokenstad | 26 | 3 | 97 | .969 | OH | K Sealock | 30 | 5 | 58 | .914 |
** = certified "Serve-Receive Ninja"For Reference:90-95% = Average 96% = Good 97% = Great 98+ = Ninja

whoa Medeck is a star when it comes to serve receive. the SDSU match isn’t coded correctly, but in the other 7 matches, she’s passing a 2.40 on 117 attempts (the most!)
Wolff is 2.16 (98) Farris 2.15 (92) Hokenstad 2.10 (85) Sealock 1.93 (42)

The other match I'd highlight is St Thomas @ NDSU.
The Bison swept the Tommies in the previous meeting.
Both teams are 4-4 in conference play, in a 3-way tie for 4th with Denver.
Statistically, both teams are similar; upper-middle ranking in most team stats (conference play only) - The Tommies are #1 in Assists/set (staying in-system?) - NDSU is #2 in Aces/set
I'd expect a good match this time around, with seeding at stake.

Can't wait to tune into the USD vs Denver! Mirabelli is going to be a little different animal than Schetnan just because SDSU runs a 6-2 and Schetnan or Burr don't run the slide. Mirabelli is so lethal on the slide, but I think if USD can dig and cover like they did against Schetnan/Burr then they should be able to contain her a bit. USD should be able to win this one but it might be another battle if Denver is hungry enough. I'm going to keep my eyes on the Tommies vs NDSU stats too. Would love to see the Tommies win that one.

And who is keeping those stats? yep, and it’s VolleyMetrics. it’s a bit subjective, but the best measurement out there for seeing how well someone is passing. a 3 is a perfect pass where every hitter can be set. a 2 would be a set that pulls the setter maybe further off the net or to one side of the net or the other that usually takes at least one option out of the offense or would make it a strenuous set for the setter (like, Cullen for SMU will set the quick 15 feet off the net sometimes but that doesn’t mean the pass is a 3, that’s a 2). a 1 is a pass that forces the setter (and a lot of times a secondary setter) to step in and take the ball and they have to throw up a high OOS ball to a pin. a 0 is obviously an ace (and I think overpasses for VM purposes? or maybe not, I can’t remember. at arizona we would give a 0 if it was an overpass that would lead directly to a kill, but a 1 if it was deep enough to be where the other team had to actually run their offense to score)
