Other than being a really long week, I think this split makes it easier for the coaches. By this time very few, if any, schools are recruiting 18's. If you see any coaches around an 18's court, they are probably just putting in some face time with their committed recruits. So that lets the coaches focus on the 16's during wave 1 and they'll probably roll in on day 3 for them. Then you'll get the 17's all by themselves for the back half of the tournament and the coaches can do some drive-by's for any 15's they may have on their recruiting lists.

I find some D3 and NAIAs looking to fill holes will still look for kids on the 18s courts the first couple of days.

Interesting setup of the bracket flow in 18 Open (I'm assuming the others as well). 3 days of pool play followed by a crossover bracket the afternoon of day 3. Looks like 2nd and 3rd from the various pools will play in a crossover game, and then the winner of that game will play one of the 1st place pool teams. The winner goes to the 8 team Championship bracket (Gold) and the loser goes to the 8 team consolation bracket (Silver) on day 4. The loser of the initial 2nd and 3rd place crossover game goes to an 8 team Flight 1 bracket (Bronze). So basically, if you win your pool on days 1-3, you get a first round bye in the crossover brackets and will end up in the Gold or Silver bracket on day 4.
That's different from last year where you had three team crossover pools on day 3 and the 1st/2nd place of those pools went into a 16 team Championship bracket that started the afternoon of day 3. The teams that lost in round 1 of the Championship bracket on day 3 went into the 8 team consolation bracket on day 4. On the bright side, this years approach eliminates the single game tiebreaker match for 2nd and 3rd that happened in a couple of the day 3 crossover pools where everyone went 1-1.

Looks like only 16 Open and 18 Open have that format. I'd assume 17 Open will as well. Those divisions all have 64 Teams. 15 Open has less teams but still multiple of 8 so it's possible they follow the same format.
