The winner of the league will be guaranteed a spot in the 2025 VolleyTalk Fantasy Champions League.

SEASON SCHEDULE AND FORMAT:

The Fall 2024 VolleyTalk Fantasy Challengers League will officially begin competition with matches on Friday, August 30 through Saturday, November 30. Week 1 competition will consist of three days of matches (Friday-Sunday); every other week of competition will consist of all matches played from Tuesday through Sunday of each week.
*Monday matches will NOT count towards Fantasy totals.

Every participant will play in a round-robin format with each participant playing every other participant once in 13 weekly head-to-head match-up of five statistical categories: kills per match, assists per match, aces per match, digs per match, and total blocks per match.

A challenger roster will be drafted by ay2013 and managed post-draft by maigrey. During the participants challenger roster week, they will submit a roster to compete against the challenger roster. Results against the challenger team will be recorded but the challenger team cannot actually win the league.

Athletes may only be selected from teams that finished in the top 75 of the RPI for year end 2023 or that belong to the Big 10, SEC, Big 12, and ACC conferences. See below for the complete list.

SCORING AND STANDINGS:
Standings will be determined by the number of points accumulated overall. Points will be accumulated as follows, and are based on who wins the most categories in the weekly match-up:

5-0 win = 4 points to the winner
4-1 win = 3 points to the winner
3-2 win = 2 points to the winner, 1 point to the loser

In the event of category ties, points accumulate as follows:
4.5-0.5 = 3.5 points to the winner, 0 points to the loser
3.5-1.5 = 2.5 points to the winner, 0.5 points to the loser
2.5-2.5 = 1.5 points to the winner, 1.5 points to the loser

Teams that win against the Challenger roster will be awarded the following bonus points:
Win 5-0: 3 points
Win 4-1: 2 points
Win 3-2: 1 point

Tiebreakers: 1) overall record, 2) head-to-head, 3) set record. If still tied through the first three categories, the participant with the last draft pick wins.

An athlete’s official stats for the purpose of this league will be the stats reported on the NCAA Statistics website. In the case of scoring disputes, NCAA stats (vs. school stats) will be the official tally.

THE DRAFT:

The draft will begin on Friday, July 26th at 12:00 PM ET. Each participant will have a 12-hour time limit to post their pick in each round. The 12-hour clock will begin at the time of the preceding participant’s pick*. When making your pick, please list them as follows:

Tag the next person in the draft order that it is their turn -- serpentine drafting (the draft order reverses in each round) will be in effect. Any edited posts may be deemed invalid. Don’t try to correct spelling or other errors. The official rosters will have the accurate info.

You may post your draft pick in the official fantasy thread during your pick window, or, if you won’t be available (or aren’t sure if you will make the time limit when your turn comes up), you may send your pick to an administrator via PM to post on your behalf or designate a proxy to the administrator.

If a drafted athlete is later found to have been removed from their team’s online roster during the draft, the participant may replace the athlete during their next pick window. If a participant mistakenly drafts an athlete that has already been drafted, or drafts an athlete from an ineligible team, the participant will need to wait until their next pick window to both correct the mistake and make their next pick**.

*At the end of the 12 hour window, administrator reserves the right to make a selection on behalf of the participant to keep the draft moving.
**Administrator reserves the right to allow for mulligans and/or replace the errant pick with a player of the same position.

ROSTERS:

***Administrator reserve the right to make all final decisions regarding athlete positions, team rosters, and active rosters.***

Each roster will be composed of 14 athletes. An athlete must be listed on their team’s online roster by the time of the first match of the season in order to be eligible. If an athlete is removed from their team’s online roster during the season (i.e. Ceasar in 2018/2021), they can only be replaced with an add/drop.
Each team roster must include all of the following at the end of the draft:

4 OH (no differentiation between pin attackers required)
3 MB
2 S
2 L
3 players of any position or many positions

At least one of the 14 athletes on the team roster must be a true or redshirt freshman in their first season of collegiate competition.

After the conclusion of the draft, changes to a team roster are allowed in the form of an add/drop. Participants are allowed unlimited add/drops through week 4. After week 4, participants are allowed 7 additional add/drops*.

*Administrator may grant additional add/drops for exceptional circumstances on a case-by-case basis.

When making your add/drop, please list them as follows:

For an athlete to be considered eligible for the following week’s active roster, the add/drop must occur by Monday night at 11:59 pm ET. For Week 1, the add/drop deadline is Wednesday, August 28 at 11:59 PM EST

Position Definitions:

OH/OPP - A player who attacks the ball in either zones 2 or 4 during a majority of their front row rotations. A player who takes the second ball during a majority of their front row rotations is not considered an OH/OPP (i.e. a setter in a 5-1 system who also attacks the ball in zone 2/3 is not considered an OH).

MB- A player who blocks the ball in zone 3, and assists the block in zones 2 and 4, during a majority of their front row rotations.

S- A player who takes the second ball during a majority of their rotations. A player designated as a L/DS cannot be defined as a setter.

L/DS - A player who does not rotate to the front row. L/DS cannot accumulate kills or blocks. A backrow only setter cannot be listed as a L/DS.

During the draft, an athlete’s roster position will be the position they’re listed as on their team’s online roster UNLESS the position listed on the online roster is different than the last position that the athlete played or the expected position that the athlete will play -- in those cases, the administrators will make the final call regarding an athlete's position. If an athlete is listed as multiple positions on their team’s online roster, you must designate their position at the time of drafting or position them in your player-of-any-position spots. For S/OPPs specifically, they can only fill a player-of-any-position spot. For freshmen and transfers, their position will be the position they’re listed as on their team’s Fall 2023 online roster. You are encouraged to reach out to the administrators prior to drafting/adding an athlete if there are any possible issues regarding their position.

Once the season starts, athlete positions will change to reflect the position that they most recently played (as of their previous match). If a player played multiple positions as of their previous match, the player can only be used in a player-of-any-position spot position on the following week's active roster (i.e. a player who played MB in one set and Opposite in another, can only be used in an ANY slot for the following week's active roster). All S/OPP who hit in the front row in a 6-2 system must be used in a player-of-any-position spot on the active roster.

Each participant will choose 9 players to place on their “Active Roster” for competition each week + 5 players on their bench in ranked order in the following format:

The five bench players should be ranked in order of who should be subbed in first when making a floating substitution (see below).

Only stats from the athletes on the active roster will count toward team totals. Any athlete(s) designated as a libero may not accumulate kills or blocks at any time.

All Fantasy teams must include a freshman on an active roster in at least 4 weeks of competition (not including the week against the Challenger roster). Fantasy teams have complete discretion in which weeks they meet this requirement, however, beginning in week 9, the administrator will review all weekly matches to ensure compliance. Roster submissions that do not include a freshman, but that must to meet this requirement by season end, will have their 2nd ANY slot replaced with the first freshman on the bench.

Active roster submissions are due by Monday at 5:00 PM ET each week. Rosters must be submitted to the administrator via PM. Active rosters for Week 1 are due by Thursday, August 29 at 11:59 PM EST. If you submit your roster early and would like to make a change, that change must be made prior to the roster deadline. At the deadline, the most recent roster submitted will be used. If you do not submit an active roster by the deadline, your roster from the previous week of competition will be carried over to the current week. If you do not submit an active roster for the first week of competition, your first 8 draft picks that satisfy the required position minimums will comprise your first active roster.


WEEKLY PLAY:

Stats from each athlete will be tallied and then divided by the number of matches played by the athlete in that week, yielding kills per match, assists per match, aces per match, digs per match, and total blocks per match for each athlete (rounded to the nearest hundredth place). Blocks will be counted individually (i.e. BS and BA each count as 1 block). Each active athlete’s per-match numbers will then be added together (and rounded to the nearest hundredth place) to give the team total in each category. Weekly match-up results will be determined by these team total figures. Non-D1 matches do not count and should be ignored.

Participants are responsible for scoring their own matches, compiling the results, and reporting the results to the league (participants are also encouraged to track their opponent’s team for accountability) in the official league thread each week after all matches have concluded. Any disputes will be resolved by an administrator using the figures from the NCAA stats website. Match results will be certified and unable to be changed no later than the beginning of the following week (i.e. Week 1 results will be final no later than the start of Week 3).

FLOATING substitution: If an active player did not play in any scheduled match during the current week of competition, the highest ranked player of the same position on the bench will be subbed in first. If an active player did not play in any scheduled match during the current week of competition and there is not a player of the same position on the bench, the next highest ranked player on the bench that keeps your roster in compliance will be subbed in next. Substitutions will happen automatically as there are no options/choices, they do not need to be submitted.

Subbing an athlete out makes that athlete inactive for the week, and none of their stats will count toward team totals. The athlete subbed in will count as one of the 10 active players on the weekly roster and all of their stats from all of their matches will count.
