Did they cut the budget for volleyball coverage? Giving them airline tickets and accommodation to Paris too much of a stretch in resources? Certainly sounds like it. Maybe things are tough at NBC and everyone over there needs to tighten their belt, but given the fact the US are the defending champions at the Olympics, you would think a US-based network could at least pony up the cash to provide some on-site coverage? But apparently not.

NBC is sending four in person for beach, Marlowe, Wong, May-Treanor and Blanton. But none for indoor. I'll be there and wonder if I'll be the only American journalist covering indoors in person.

After the indoor VNL results, I'm not sure anyone can blame them.

I just watched the podcast with the indoor commentating team.. it seemed like they thought they were going? Barney said all he had was a flight insinuating he was going... hmm

It seems that NBC is sending broadcasters for the more popular sports like track and field, swimming, diving, gymnastics, basketball, women's soccer, and beach volleyball (more popular than indoor at the Olympics). I'm a little surprised that golf is getting so many in-person broadcasters. There is a weird one in taekwondo, but I think their analyst actually works for USA Taekwondo, so he was probably going to be in Paris in his professional capacities anyway.

Well Paris is too expensive lol... the cost of putting 4 professionals up for volleyball for 2-2.5 weeks is 40k ish, likely more and thats just housing.

Do we really need Barney walking around Paris looking for a bagel shop or a Denny's?

One of the unintended consequences of the pandemic is that organizations understood what those of us who work in tech have known for a long time... There are some activities that can be done remotely and provide a high level of service. That does not mean that they cannot be done (and done better) on site. It just means that as a budget holder you have the ability to save money by not paying for on site resources (or office space). This is a particularly dynamic time for this discussion across the board whether it is live broadcasting a volleyball event or Return to Office in the professional world.. (see below) I am not sure if there is a right answer but it certainly creates some challenging conversations. www.thestreet.com/employment/dell-workers-make-risky-move-to-dodge-return-to-office-mandate

Still think it’s lame that the defending gold medalists get this treatment. I guess NBC doesn’t have the numbers or narratives to Back it up…

I offered it to them, to be there, but they are set, they toled me. This whole accredtitation thing is difficult if you not TV, so I would have reported for you, but I not made it from the waiting list into the credential status. Don´t know why they give accreditation to people that not cover the sport between these 4 years and not us...........
