It seems that NBC is sending broadcasters for the more popular sports like track and field, swimming, diving, gymnastics, basketball, women's soccer, and beach volleyball (more popular than indoor at the Olympics). I'm a little surprised that golf is getting so many in-person broadcasters. There is a weird one in taekwondo, but I think their analyst actually works for USA Taekwondo, so he was probably going to be in Paris in his professional capacities anyway. NBC owns the Golf Channel, and is televising the tournaments on the Golf Channel. I'm sure they are covering this like they would any other Golf tournament. And it seems they are doing MORE than they do any other volleyball tournament, so by comparison...

Well Paris is too expensive lol... the cost of putting 4 professionals up for volleyball for 2-2.5 weeks is 40k ish, likely more and thats just housing. Providing on-site coverage is more than just watching Barnett and Sunderland be tourists in Paris. I don't think any of us want or care to see them do that on TV, I mean the "Today" show hosts does that "light fluffy news" segment. I'm more interested in the fact that on-site coverage can provide live interviews in person with the players and coaches. Sure, you can do that too with remote satellite broadcast, but there is a difference to being on-site vs being remote. One can pick up certain nuances, certain "vibes" and "feel" of the arena, the crowd and from the players themselves, that is difficult to do while being remote. That can matter in some cases. I hope at least NBC can rope in the beach hosts to do some live interviews and commenting and relay that to Barnett and Sunderland at the studio.

funny that heather cox didn't have an asterisk next to her name, like the other 3 ... noting they'd be working remotely.
so cox, as the sideline reporter, will actually be on the sideline? ... while sunderland, barnett and rockwell will be huddled over a monitor in CT ...

beach volleyball (more popular than indoor at the Olympics). Seems weird, but I can believe it.
Still lots of non-volleyball people who think volleyball is sand volleyball, and court volleyball is "olympic volleyball".

It appears Heather Cox will be there for interviews. The problem with calling the game from a TV screen is that the TV cameras miss some things. Having an onsite announce can let the viewer know what has happened off screen. Also, they can, sometimes, alert the director to cut to a view of something that is happening.

Yes that too, I hinted as much in my original post. That on-site "angle" you can't get by being remote. Now they will have to depend on whoever NBC has on-site to relay that angle to the studio, a more cumbersome process than the live on-air at the site broadcast.

Is NBC even sending any of its own crews to cover volleyball, or will they just be using the world feed? It wouldn’t surprise me if they have no control over what images and replays they get, regardless of whether announcers are on site or not.

That's true, but NBC has determined that whatever benefits they get from having on-site announcers are outweighed by the cost of putting them there. I wish they were there, but it is what it is. I think the coverage will ultimately be fine. Broadcasters have been calling games remotely for a while.

We want to get Peacock if we want to watch the full match, right? On network TV, they miss a few points for ads and such...

So who are clayton and some of the other britcasters broadcasting for? Gotta get my vpn out or make sure i watch the turkish streams live Based on past experience, more general international broadcast feed, for the UK, maybe Australia and other countries that don't have their own indoor volleyball coverage but relies on some other broadcast to cover it, and don't mind English with a British accent commenting on the matches (or they simply dub over it).

Sideline reporters are typically remote from the announcing team anyway. As long as the speed of light issues aren't too extreme (like bouncing off of geostationary sats, which introduces a delay of about 1/4 second), does it matter how remote they are?

So who are clayton and some of the other britcasters broadcasting for? Gotta get my vpn out or make sure i watch the turkish streams live there is the OBS which has Clayton and the Brit casters working for them and that’s able to be picked up by the 100+ countries who don’t send their own commentary. Some like Australia send their own, for beach Kerri P and the USA. Not sure who else. I saw Ci M is with usavolleyball on her Instagram.
