Winiarski was the difference in this match.
He made the right subs and influential challenges to get his team in position to win.
At the end of the day, being the FIVB darlings doesn’t win matches.

I was there and it was an interesting match - Japan super weak in the middle - the two net challenges in 4th made a huge difference.

So, the Japan unraveling begins I didn’t see the first set but clearly they were not ready or nervous. Give all the credit to Germany and for sure their coach (netsetter noted above) to their coach for making the appropriate changes and challenges.

If Sekita doesn't get it together they are getting grouped 0-3.

If Sekita doesn't get it together they are getting grouped 0-3. The issue is the middles don’t run very good routes. It’s pretty simple. And when called upon, it’s either too predictable or the middles are too soft. Opposite went cold for Japan, and Sekita felt the pressure of setting Yuki as he is the man in his mind. I felt that Ran recovered one of the worst matches of his career, only to not get enough opportunities to be clutch towards the end

So, the Japan unraveling begins We saw this happen in OQT. Except now they have 2 games left to course correct and idk if going 1-2 will be good enough to advance. They need other pools to favor them or they need to go 2-1.

He usually makes up for it with pristine location and decision making to his outsides... Neither of which was good. He could have closed out that 4th by just giving it to Ran, as you said. I'm more concerned with how poor the set locations were in general. How often do you see Ishikawa and Nishida spray 4-5 balls out in a set?

That is true. The weight of situation is definitely a factor, he was not great in the near loss to Finland and the loss to Egypt in OQT. Perhaps a loss here helps change his mindset and thus location, but it’s not looking that good for them as of right now
