Can't the B10 coaches all sign a letter banning her from their universities? She made some absolutely SICKENING calls tonight. The thing is, she doesn't do it when the score is, say, 8-5. She waits until she can kill some momentum. Coach Stone was chatting w/ the woman who observes the officiating tonight after the match. I wish someone would do something fast.
Maybe PacTen football could use another "qualified" instant replay doofus. ;D

How dare you insult the mighty Joan Powell? She will have her enforcers in the volleyball community hunt you down and squash you like a grape! She has serious muckity-muck status in volleyball, so you better mind your p's and q's.

They would probably be the same idiots who surrounded her (for her own safety) and ushered her out of the building in Minnesota after the Regional Final in 2004. Perhaps there weren't any seeing-eye-dogs to accompany her. Funny, you never see another official's name on this site except for her.

It's mostly OSU fans, however.
I find it funny when you concentrate on one of the better NCAA refs when there are so many better targets out there...
Fact is, it's not an easy game to ref and it's becoming more difficult the looser the ballhandling has become.
Anyhow, don't you have higher priorities? Like bringing OSU volleyball communications into the 20th century (let alone the 21st)?
Sincerely,
(R)uffda! Powell

She needs protection from the 15-20 OSU parents that were there? If so, seems as if there's a problem with the parents...

Is she the animal behaviorist who shows up on the Late Night TV shows? With the baby cheetahs and orangutans who look like Dr. Phil?

Whether you like the level of BHE she calls or not, I've yet to see a match where she was inconsistant in her level of calls. I've seen her quite a few times.
There's the "Let'em play" group (no harm no foul) and the "Call it Tight" group (1 rotation, 2 rotation, beep, double). She's definitely not in the latter. She is not one of these refs that waits to see how much spin a ball has then makes a call. She looks for actual doubles. That's why you'll occasionally see her call a double on a beautifully lofted floating set and let other balls go that rotate about 10 times in the air. She understands what a Double contact truly means and actually watches what happens at the setter's hands when contacting the ball.
I've also never seen her force her presence in a match, "Hey look at me, I'm gonna call something just so the coaches know I'm here and in control".
Most people I see criticize refs tend fall in to a few categories and likely have never ref'd a high level match in their life. Obviously this isn't always the case but it tends to be a pretty good guesstimate.
Is she the best ref out there? Probably not.
Is she the worst? Stupid question on my part, never mind.

I don't have facts to back this up, but I dare say she has officiated as many, if not more, final 4's than any other official.
In order to get to that point, you need to be promoted by college coaches and not simply other officials who are part of "the club".
I would say, given the choice, most DI coaches are going to ask for Joan Powell and a handful of others to be on the stand for the big match.
On top of it, she is one of the nicest and most sincere people you will ever meet. She takes her officiating very seriously and without prejudice.
I'll take Joan on my court for any of my college matches.

It's standard procedure to have security after a match whether you need it or not.
