Hawaii is in the WAC. That guarantees them a good 19 wins per year (16 in season and 3 in tourney), (+/- 1 or 2 wins depending on future WAC configuration) plus some cupcake competition in the preseason tourneys. They will win at least 21 or 22 every year. So, I don't think they will go downhill. But I don't see them going uphill either. Nor do I see them winning the NCAA title in the next 10 years. Do they have internet on airplanes?

--Houston has major potential. She just needs to be more consistent. She is averaging more than 5 kills a game this year. --Hittle wasn't the same after her injury last year. Hopefully she will be able to heal and be as good as she was prior to her injury. (Hopefully, 2 more seasons with Tara) --Thomas, the coaches prior to the season were impressed with how much she improved over the summer. But she had an ankle injury at the beginning of the season then had her season ending injury. She has 2 or 3 seasons ahead of her (does she qualify for a medical redshirt?) --Lee is just a freshmen, she is just going to get better and better --Kaufman also a freshmen, but you can see the potential there. --Gregory and Sanders show their ability to terminate when they get a good set. --The recruits for 2007--Simmons, Otineru, and hopefully Klineman shows Hawaii has a good outlook for the future. (I know I'm missing one recruit, I just can't remember right now) Liz Ka'aihue

The only real concern for next year is the setting position. Dani Mafua is a converted OH, I think? Dave and his crazy ideas...

Has anyone seen mafua play? Yes. She has great hands and is super athletic. I think everyone will be very pleased. She rocked her club team the last two years. Enough so, that people would gather to watch her play. Don't worry Hawaii will be fine. Next year they will have hitters galore, a great setter, and the passers will mature even more. But please don't count them out this year. They have a lot of heart and talent.

Dave and his crazy ideas... this is a little misleading ... it's not like she has never set before stepping foot on the UH campus. i believe (and correct me if i'm wrong), mafua's played setter and also OH as part of 6-2 in high school/club. let's not forget that ah mow was both a setter/OH out of high school. even kamanao was a setter/hitter in a 6-2 in high school (and with the jr national team, she was a libero even). that's just what happens when you've got an athlete who can play multiple positions well. mafua being able to focus purely on setting at UH will no doubt go a long way to her development. let's see what she can do before we count her out... given HI's track record with setters, mafua should be just fine...

If all of that holds, the only question remains: how well can she block? I mean one thing that KK/Ah Mow have that not many 5-9-ish setters is exceptional jumping and blocking ability/technique!

EDIT: NO Sorry, my bad. She was an OH at MidPac. Shoji is not the only one who saw a lot of potential in Mafua. Despite having little experience as a setter she was good enough to be ranked 27 as a setter in the Senior Aces list. (Kaufman was ranked 25.)

Does anyone out there think that Hawaii is on the downward spiral from being a national powerhouse, like LBSU, or is this just a bad year with injuries? I mean, even with everyone healthy, they still were getting their clocks cleaned pretty good by ranked teams, and are clawing and scratching for wins against perceived lower opponents. And before anyone jumps on my a**, I AM a Hawaii fan, and have been all my life (although I live in Seattle now and root for the Huskies just as much). I just have this feeling that the team does not look in that great shape for the next few years. We don't have a real consistent terminator, we lose Kanoe, and everyone else just seems, well, kind of mediocre. Don't get me wrong, this is still a top 25 team for sure, but nowhere near the level it was for the past 10 years. I also think that this is just a down year. Although, when Hawaii passes well, they play pretty darn good. I wouldn't count them out yet. That said, for some reason Hawaii doesn't attract the top 5 recruits in the country but they develop into great players. (Were Kim and Lily top 5 recruits? I don't remember). (I know I'm missing one recruit, I just can't remember right now) You forgot Duggins, she's only a Sophomore, and will no doubt challenge Lee for the Libero position. I just hope Duggins doesn't wimp out on her JS in the future because she could really kick butt once she fixes her consistency! Moreover, since you brought it up, I too have thought about this, and I guess you could call it wishful thinking..... but hey if the players really can improve and potential can turn into the actuality then why not? ;D. Disclaimer: This is only if Klineman and Otineru do come to UH, and if everyone is healthy.LS1-Houston- she's learned how to hit those off plays and can hit line accurately(what she's been working on this season). Becomes a consistent goto player. MB1- Sanders- Healthy, able to hit for a high pct; read/close blocks well; become an offensive threat. S- Mafua- Can block well(ala KK's Frosh year); Connect well with hitters. LS2-Klineman- Is as advertised. Becomes consistent go to player. MB2- Gregory- Hit for a high pct. and become a threat offensively. OPP.-Otineru- already a good second setter, could be a role player(a la Boogaard). Libero- Lee- After a year of experience; more consistent, and possibly develop a stronger (Float) serve. LOL----I think i'm comparing her a little too much with Candace Lee, but can you blame me?--she's good for only a freshman. DS- Tara Hittle(for Klineman)- Healthy, will almost always get the job done. Also she can hit BR. DS- Elise Duggins(for Houston)- improve and uses her JS; vastly improved in the BR. Am I too biased? ;D MB/RS- Kaufman(for whoever is struggling)- Even now, she seems like the type of player who can just come off the bench and quickly contribute. With a year of experience, she improves greatly on her hitting/blocking. Serving Specialist(for middle opposite Lee in BR)- I feel i'm going out on a limb here, but KONG! Her first two year, her serves were very good, and if she sticks with the team for the next year or so, and works hard on her serving and defense, she could develop into a productive server. As a team, I have no worries about passing because the only ones touching the BR would be: Mafua, Otineru, Lee, Ong, Duggins, Klineman/Hittle. Serving too: The only one of concern would probably be Mafua. Again THIS IS ALL JUST WISHFUL THINKING----- FOR FUN!!!!!!
