The sacrifices one must make. I have already accepted the fact I'll miss the OSU-Gopher match tonight because my wife's team is playing in high school playoffs. That's just the way things work.
But here's the more difficult question: If the wife's team is playing a team who has a player who is a committed recruit on your favorite college team -- let's just say the Gophers, for instance -- do you:
1) Root for your wife's team to shut the recruit down and win the match? 2) Root for the future Gopher to light up your wife's team like they were 10-year-old firecrackers soaked in gasoline? 3) Root for the future Gopher to have a great match, but still lose to your wife's team? (This one is particularly tricky.) 4) Skip the whole scene and attend the Gopher match instead -- and deal with the fallout later?
Are there other options?
Hypothetically, of course.

Here's an option: Quit boring me.

Choose (4). Conflicts of interest are always problematic, and it's better to just avoid them and go watch the Gophers play.
An alternative is to root for the referees. Go... Refs! Call that lift! Double contact! On the line! Yellow card that coach!

You better be on your wife's side. But you can hope Gibbmeyer? has an okay match.

All hypothetical.
But if it were someone like Gibbemeyer, you'd hope she'd have a better match than "okay". I mean, really, my wife can't coach her way out of a paper bag.

I think having flowers delivered to her match might help her forget that you are not actually there but are enjoying the Gopher-OSU match instead. In the attached not, I would avoid all references to paper bags though.

I'm thinking body armor may be a more appropriate gift.
In the hypothetical...

I don't think body armour would be an appropriate gift but a necessity for you! Although, you would probably prefer an electric blanket for those cold, lonely nights you will be spending outside.
As I told you, you should have stuck with the standard wedding vows. Nothing in there about having to choose your wife's volleyball team over your favorite team.

A-Mac: Can I use a life line?
*A-Mac calls Wolfgang*
A-Mac: Uh, Wolfgang, (R)uffda want to know what he should do: A. Root for his wife's team B. Root for the future Gopher C. Root for the future Gopher but still lose to his wife's team D. Skip the match
Wolfgang: Summary please. Thank, in advance
A-Mac: But, that was the summary...
Wolfgang: Oh, then I choose option E.
A-Mac: There is no option E.
Wolfgang: Well then why are you asking me, doof?
*Wolfgang hangs up*
A-Mac: I'd like to poll the audience...I mean the board. Oh wait, I can't because (R) didn't make this a poll? What a silly Gopher. I choose D than. But then again I'm not married so I'm not sure if you're wife will be mad and if so how much. Best of luck with that.

"... because my wife's team is playing in high school playoffs. "
If she is a player, you must pick #1. If she is a coach, you can pick #3.
Unless you have been really obnoxious at the games, in preparation to get let off the hook, and she would want you to pick #4?

Yikes. If she's a player, I should be locked up. Or, at the very least, held in contempt.
Wolfgang, I withdraw the non-apology.

I thought this was about VB couples, like Patty and Mike Dodd, or Jerritt Elliott and Sarah Silvernail.

A nice twist to this thread would've been: volleyball lesbian couples.
I'm from the Bay Area so this type of stuff is not uncommon for me to witness.
