I noticed that too. I wonder if Jordan Smith is all right. Laura Kroneberger is not a good passer. I've seen her shank free balls.

Okay, I get the whole "she doesn't play all the way around" argument, but Meriwether is unreal. She's got 20 kills and 11 blocks, hitting .611, and g4 isn't over yet. That's pretty impressive, no matter who you're playing.

I can't find Colby Lyman in gametracker. I wonder if Andy planned to use his bench tonight. Kroneberger has 18 digs, and Nana still has 11 blocks.

Rachell just seems out of position every time she's in front. And, she's a below average blocker. So just like you, I wonder why Andy doesn't use Schoen. So what you're saying is that you know more than Andy Banachowski about who should be playing. And you're at every practice, right? And you were in Italy, and you were at the Open Nationals . . . Your comments and Blastingsand's comments are pretty off base. Rachell is the starter because she is extemely athletic, very quick, jumps really high, and gets kills the subs could not. Schoen does hit a good slide, but not so much the quicks. Also, Rachell is a pretty good blocker. Give Banachowski some credit where it's due - he knows his team and he knows who has earned the starting spots.

She is very awkward and I agree she seems like a detriment, she is much more effective and comfortable on the outside. The few times they decide to sub Schoen in she does fantastic. Although her play time has been limited her hitting/kill percentage is very high. Even when Johnson is really struggling (which is often) Banachowski seems very hesitant to put Schoen in, maybe Schoen is still having issues with her knee. Tonight they put Schoen in at the end of the 3rd game and she started the 4th, she hit a .571, Johnson hit a .182. On the season Schoen is hitting a .359, Johnson is hitting a .219. Maybe is not a fair comparison because Johnson has had so many more attempts but a .219 is not impressive. If they are counting on Johnson next year they are going to have big middle issues. UCLA is very deep in the outside maybe that is why they moved Johnson to the middle and maybe Schoens injury is why Johnson was moved, Johnson should move back to the outside and I believe Schoen would really help the consistency in the middle. Johnson seems to disintegrate really fast, she may be athletic but she is not mentally tough! Who cares about how well an athlete practices, isn't how an athlete performs during game time that counts, I think Schoen is much tougher and consistent then Johnson during game time!

I was just wondering why she was used more than Schoen. Seeing that Schoen is a little taller and was doing really well last year before the injury.

Johnson isn't all that tall, is she? I am sure Andy has reasons for playing her, and they are having a very good season, but I have to think her margin of error, especially on the block, is less than that of a taller middle. In the Pac 10, I have to think a lot of people can hit over her. It might be a problem when they are trying to win a national title. I also agree that .219 isn't too good for a middle, no matter who you are playing. On the other hand, Meriwether is just playing great, so Johnson just needs to play a solid match so that teams can't put together runs against the Bruins in her rotations. Then, Nana can come in and key UCLA runs by being awesome.

I'm in agreement with all of you that chastise people for offering their opinions of coaching decisions and players. That kind of thing should be taken to a board that concerns itself with discussion of NCAA women's volleyball.

R. Johnson was very impressive in Hawaii. Yes, she was an undersized middle, but she has great court awareness and played consistently well with the other players. She had up-and-down times, like most players do. I'm guessing that you're remembering the down-times more than the good plays. Regardless, Andy's not a fool, he's playing the best players he can right now to make his team win.

He has plenty of combinations to play and you are correct, he plays whomever is playing the best....no loyalty to any specific players has been his MO for loooong time.....unfortunately he has some kids who could start at many other places, on GOOD TEAMS. AT UCLA you just have to be able to cope with only playing occasionally..............got that JD?

UCLA will miss Nana Meriwether next year. She's been great. Rachell Johnson (the other middle) has been a big disappointment this year. I wonder why Andy won't sub the other middle for her. Rachell is not a true middle and she's so awkward in that position. UCLA will be hurting next year for middle blockers. Actually, middle is Johnson's natural position. She was a middle all the way in high school and switched to outside in college. She looked awkward and comfortable on the pins and was hurting UCLA more then helping over there. That's why Banachowski switched her back into the middle. Yes she is undersized, but she is more effective in the middle than on the outside.

Last year Johnson played outside exclusively, she did not start and only played in 76 games, she hit a .235 / averaging 3.12 K/game, this year at middle she has already played in 76 games and is hitting a .219, 2.32 K/game. How is she more effective in the middle? I know this is not a stat but some of the biggest kills I have seen Johnson make was when she rotated to the outside from the middle. She does not look comfortable or confident in the middle regardless of what all of the Johnson fans exclaim!
