Warriors Drop Emotional Senior Night Match to UC Irvine, 3-2
Box Score
HONOLULU--In the last home match for the University of Hawai`i's men's volleyball team, UC Irvine stole their first win in the Stan Sheriff Center on Saturday night, defeating the Warriors in five games, 18-30, 23-30, 30-27, 30-26, and 15-13. By dropping the final home match for seniors Arri Jeschke, Jake Muise, Joshua Stanhiser, Kimo Tuyay, and Ryan Woodward, No. 6 Hawai`i fell to 16-10 on the season, and 12-8 in the MPSF.
On senior night, it was sophomore Pedro Azenha leading the way for the Warriors, with 23 kills and 3 service aces. Fellow sophomore Matt Bender added 18 kills to go with 3.5 blocks, while Tuyay posted 52 assists and 4 kills in Hawai`i's fifth five-game outing in its last seven matches. Hawai`i started out on fire, hitting .388 in winning games one and two, but could not maintain their energy level, closing the match with a .071 hitting percentage in game five.
Game one was a tight battle until an Azenha kill started a 5-1 Hawai`i run, giving the Warriors an 18-14 lead. Two quick UCI (12-17, 6-14 MPSF) timeouts were unable to slow Hawai`i, as the Warriors took 12 of the next 16 points, ending with a Bender ace, to win game one.
Behind a combined five kills from Azenha and Stanhiser, the Warriors opened game two with a 15-10 lead. UCI fought back and cut the Hawai`i lead to 18-16 with a Brett Reid and Kyle Weichert block. However, the Anteaters could not stop Azenha, who notched the next five points for the Warriors as Hawai`i coasted to the 30-23 win.
Hawai`i controlled game three early, taking a 7-2 advantage, but UCI refused to give in and drew even at 13-13 on a Jayson Jablonsky kill. Trading points back-and-forth, a Bender error gave UCI their first lead since game one, 21-20. Hawai`i briefly regained control, 26-24, but the Anteaters reeled off a 6-1 run, ending with a Stanhiser service error, to steal game three.
Fired up at the start of game four by two kills and an ace by Delano Thomas, the Warriors again seized an edge early, but momentum turned the Anteater's way once more. Battling for control, three straight UCI blocks led to an 18-15 advantage that they would not relinquish. Bender's error off an errant Tuyay set ended game four and knotted the match at 2-2.
Hawai`i seemingly seized control of the fifth game, 8-6, on a Bender and Maulia LaBarre block, but UCI showed their resilience one final time. Taking advantage of Azenha's fourth service error of the night, UCI took a 13-12 lead and soon snatched the win away from the Warriors.
Next week the Warriors will wrap up regular season play in Malibu, Calif. with a pair of matches at Pepperdine. First serve for the April 15 and 16 matches is set for 7 pm PDT at Firestone Fieldhouse.
