Just wondering about Brooke Bartek's possible visits to UK and KU. Any decision? Brooke, it's one of those spectacular, sunny Colorado winter mornings with skies that are the "baby blue" of a George Strait song and after last night's light dusting of snow, you can pick out individual pines on the foothills below the 14ers. Come visit Denver University!

Well my brother lives North of Denver and I know what their winter has been like Today in Long Beach, it will be about 80 degrees, absolutely no clouds, no smog, and a nice breeze....it's why I live here, running around year round in shorts and a T'Shirt! You gotta love it! ;D

Yeah but part of the other reason Beachman lives in LB is so he can spend the VB offseason bouncing back and forth between the 49er Tavern and Happy Hour at Sushi Studio and The Green Field All You Can Eat Brazilian BBQ!

Funny and kind of ironic that you would mention those places, all of which I either wouldn't be caught dead in, or just don't like Fortunately we have hundreds of great places to eat and be happy in this town but those places you mentioned aren't on my long list let alone my short one!

And, there are plenty of universities in Southern California where you can get a much better education than in Long Beach (like Westwood). And, there are plenty of places in Southern California where you can play on a much better volleyball team than in Long Beach (like Westwood). Am I being subtle enough?

Check your history, Bear Clause. Sons of Westwood (I am guessing Cal has a different name for it) was UCLA's fight song before it became Cal's fight song.
We are the sons of Westwood, and we hail the blue and gold, true to thee our hearts will be, our love will not grow old.
Bruins roam the hills of Westwood, by the blue Pacific shore, and if by chance they see a man from USC, every Bruin starts to roar!
U rah rah rah rah, C rah rah rah rah, L rah rah rah rah, A rah rah rah rah
U. C. L. A FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT!

Don't know if this is merely sarcasm or you really believe it (I don't care), but this is simply for those who may not be aware of the history. The following is the "official" UCLA take. Our take is more involved, and involves lawyers and the eventual realization that the song wasn't copyrighted (Doh!) when it was written in 1913 by a couple of Cal students. www.uclahistoryproject.ucla.edu/Songs/SonsofWestwood.htmlHere's our take (story at the end after the lyrics): www.calband.berkeley.edu/calband/media/calsongs/bigc.html

I went to one of the oldest established (late 1800s) school districts in Colorado and our fight song is the same as U of Michigan's. Snappy tune but I'm pretty certain that we stole it from the Wolverines and not the other way around. Anyhoo...still wondering what's up with Ms. Bartek. I'll check back with you later after I take my black lab for a hike up Barr Trail on Pikes Peak. Too nice today to stay inside. Now where are my shades?... so bright outside...

Certainly there's been a lot of "borrowing" of fight songs among college marching bands where their teams don't face each other on a regular basis. I even remember someone from Georgia Tech talking about this a few years back as it pertained to a song they adopted after hearing the Cal Band play the tune at the 1929 Rose Bowl. That apparently wasn't even an original tune from Cal (although "The Big C" was original) as were a few others in their songbook. However - I question the propriety of lifting a fight song from a conference rival, especially given that their teams will play each other multiple times a year. The fact was, the UCLA Band was specifically asked to stop back in the 60's soon after they started the practice and refused.

And what if they see a woman from USC? What happens then?

I love Yale, all of their fight songs are so blissfully fixated on Crimson stoners:
Goodnight, poor Harvard Harvard, goodnight! Oh, we've got your number, you're high as a kite. Oh, Oh, Oh, Goodnight, poor Harvard, you're tucked in tight. When the big blue team gets after you Harvard, goodnight!

I will put my LBS education up against your UCLA one any time.....lets compare class sizes to start Student to teacher ration is much lower at the Beach and at LBS you have a much better chance of actually getting a real professor or instructor teaching your that at UCLA, where you are most likely to get a grad student running the show, you know one who doesn't have any real teaching credentials ;D

To California, to California, The hills ring out our cry, We're out to do or die, To California, to California, We'll win the game or know the reason why.
And when the game is over, we will buy a case of booze, And we'll drink to California 'til we wobble in our shoes.

Except for a few lower-division lecture classes, most were in classes of less than 40 students. In addition, every professor was available during office hours for one-on-one consultation. I suppose that you should be proud of your LBSt. degree. But, don't ever try to argue that it is superior (or even remotely close) to a degree from UCLA.
