What's the deal?? Arizona did not play well in the Pac-10 this past season. They were at the bottom half of the Pac-10. Isn't Hawaii the top of their league?

True, but that WAC isn't a particularly strong conference. The Pac 10 got 3 teams into the Final Four. The WAC got 2 teams into the entire NCAA tournament. Truthfully, I would guess that the top half of the Pac 10 would run through the WAC just as Hawaii has done for the past decade.

Okay lets compare what you just stated here...the PAC-10...Arizona plays teams such as UCLA, Stanford, USC, Cal and Washington in league play...these teams are constantly ranked in the top 25...top 15...Hawai`i plays in the WAC and they play teams such as Nevada, New Mexico State, Utah State, Fresno State, etc...these teams are never ranked...maybe once in a blue moon...until this season of course with NMSU... Hawai`i is on top of their league while, Arizona was in the middle...compare the opponents and you'll find out why... Second...Hawai`i currently has four of their top players out with injuries...Juliana Sanders, Jessica Keefe, Nickie Thomas and Tara Hittle...and lets not forget they lost Kanoe Kamana`o to graduation...their four-time all-American...so in other words the Wahine's line-up last nite wasn't even close to what we'll be seeing in the fall...it just gave the reserves some good playing time... so that's why the Wahine struggled a bit last nite...

I was a Woolford defender at times last season. I agree she's had her big moments (and she made improvements in her game during the course of last season), but she's also had some seriously low points. My frustration is this: Among the defensive specialists/liberos, she has spent the longest time developing with the UH program, and yet her consistency and her steadiness is not better than the others. It's certainly not on par with Lee's, and there is a good argument that she's not as consistent as Duggins (who beat Woolford out for playtime last year subbing in for Kaufman). At last night's exhibition, it was Lee & Duggins playing libero, and not Woolford. I will say this about Woolford's game: She can be spectacular on defense. But like I said earlier, defensive specialists need to be able to pass first, play defense second. And after the setter, the liberos/DS's need be the most steady out on the court. There was a play last night where Woolford put up an "ooh and aah" inducing dig of Dosty to keep the rally alive, and as the play continued, AZ sent an easy freeball over, which Woolford overpassed and Hawaii lost the point. In a nutshell, that's kinda been the story of Woolford's career so far ... I agree with you. I think the reason why some fans are frustrated with Woolford is that she has spent the longest time developing in the Wahine system and yet the younger players are moving ahead of her. In 2003, Shoji said she was athletically a perfect libero. Last year, she started the opener because Shoji said she "has paid her dues." I think Raeceen's athletic, a good defender, quick-footed and covers a lot of court. Her biggest issue is ball control. She can't control her passes and digs, thus limiting the setter's options.

I didn't read the whole thread, but what's the word on Kristina Baum? Did she get the medical redshirt?

I didn't read the whole thread, but what's the word on Kristina Baum? Did she get the medical redshirt? She was supposed to be a senior last year, right? (listed as such on their roster, anyway) I don't know anything official about the medical redshirt (or even her injury for that matter), but I can say that she was at the match and apparently has been in spring training with the team(see her blog at: www.arizonaathletics.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=8131&SPID=517&DB_OEM_ID=1600&ATCLID=588333 ). Unless she was just along for a free trip to Hawaii , I'd guess that her chances of getting the medical redshirt must be pretty good, if she didn't get it already.

I didn't read the whole thread, but what's the word on Kristina Baum? Did she get the medical redshirt? One of the local Hawaii papers reported that Baum will play one more year: "A big part of Arizona's downfall was the loss of senior Kristina Baum, who went out early in the season with injury and starts her second "senior" year tonight." the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2007/Mar/15/sp/FP703150347.html

Hawai`i played a decent match tonight considering all that they were missing. Juliana Sanders and Tara Hittle were the main ones that the Wahine were missing in the line-up tonight. Jamie Houston was spectacular on the outside, Hawai`i's lone bright spot on offense. Dani did a decent job as her first time running the Wahine offense, but you can hear some growns from the crowd on some of her sets as they were off the mark preventing her hitters from really terminating the ball. But Jamie did an excellent job in keeping the offsets in play. It was actually pretty interesting as I sat in front of the girls from `Imi `Ike volleyball club (with future Wahine Liz Ka`aihue and Kanani Herring) and it was interesting to hear their constructive criticism of the Wahine, while they cheered them on. Kari Gregory seemed to struggle tonight on both offense and defense and she never got into her form that she ended the season with. I don't think there is anything to worry about going into next season because the Wahine have several great recruits coming in (Ferrell, Simmons, Brandt, and Ka`aihue), as well as all the injured girls coming back from injuries. And the off-season will definitely give Dani time to polish up her setting and connections with her hitters, while it will give the healthy girls a chance to improve even more on their games. As another poster stated earlier I think Woolford, Lee, and Duggins are pretty much the only backrow players that will be sticking around for next season. No offense to Rayna Kitaguchi, but she doesn't look that confident in the back row as she looks really tentative on her passing as she doesn't follow through on her passes and honestly to me it doesn't look like she's improved. Same with Makana Recca, to her defense I haven't really seen much of her as she really hasn't gotten time to prove herself, but I think it will be hard for Dave to keep them on the team at this point. Of course I would love to see them stick around and grow and improve in their game, but Dave seriously needs to trim down his back row players so each player can get more reps and improve on their back row play. But as I mentioned earlier I don't think tonight is a close indication what so ever on what to expect next season. The Wahine will be a great team next season with everyone back healthy (hopefully). One last note, it was awesome to see Kanoe back in uniform tonight for the last time. She will surely be missed and it will definitely be different not seeing her on the court. But I have faith in Dani that she'll step right in and do a great job running the Wahine offense. thanks for the match summary!! one thing i was surprised at - was this match wasnt a 5 games match as previous years -- no matter if a team was leading 3-0 in games - it was still agreed upon by both coaches to just play 5 games regardless

It is just interesting how Hawaii is always talked about on this forum like they are one of the top teams.
They are beaten by Arizona who lost all season to UCLA, Arizona State, Washington, USC, Cal, Stanford & Oregon In other words, almost every team in the league

Well, to be fair, it is the spring.
You can put some significance on the results, but not much.

Well, to be fair, it is the spring. You can put some significance on the results, but not much. YOU ARE CORRECT, IT'S SPRING AND IT DON'T REALLY MEAN SQUAT! Half the time teams are using players who have already used up their eligibility i.e. Mason and Kamanao, and when you factor in the newcomers who invariably show up the first day of double days, you are talking totally different line-ups between Spring and Fall.....Plus in Arizona's case their head coach couldn't win a championship with any level of talent......can you say UNDERACHIEVE??

It is ludicrous to compare spring matches to matches played during the regular season. The team Hawai'i put on the court against the Wildcats is not the same team they will put on the court come the regular season. Hawai'i beat both Oregon and USC in the tourney last year anyway. Hawai'i has not been ranked outside of the top 25 since 1992, and have made 8 consecutive regionals. They are one of the top teams. If we were tooting the horn of some crappy team like Arizona State, then I could see questions being asked but Hawai'i is an entirely more successful entity.
