So, I caught the NCAA Basketball selection show today on one of the main network channels. It really made me upset.
Volleyball gets 5-minutes on ESPNews. Men's basketball gets over an hour with analysts and video and team shots, etc. etc. etc. Do we have to throw a title-9 at the NCAA? (Would it work?)
I think that volleyball deserves a lot more than thier 1/3 of 15-minutes of fame; it wouldn't take a whole bunch to tell a little bit about the regional sites, the teams, and maybe interview a former coach or something.
Anyway, there is a lot more to it than I know, concerning logisitics, etc. but it sure would be great to have at least a half-hour show talking about the season!

I thought the show on ESPNews was more than 5 minutes. However - at Cal they turned it into a pizza party in the Haas Pavilion club room. It did get a little tense in the room as Cal was in the absolute last group of four. Sam Carter and Angie Pressey were having a good time. Kat Reilly and Am'ra Solomon got a little tired of waiting though. Oh - I guess Cal starts off the 2007 season hosting Idaho. So IB - are you coming?

As much as we all want to see a selection show, it is not happening anytime soon. It all comes down to money. Except for a few regional markets and a small yet loyal fanbase, most of the US is not that interested in volleyball. It's sad but true.

Part of that is exposure... not much of the US KNOWS about volleyball... double-edged sword.

Agree the selection show last December was a joke. Even if they keep it on ESPN News if they simply did a better job with it that would at least be a start. As for the exposure and all of the other stuff the NCAA isn't going to spend much advertising dollars for the vb tourney until vb can start turning a profit. That's just the facts of the NCAA. It's not about title 9, it's about vb and it's fans stepping up.

Here's a fun twist on the whole March Madness thing - fill out your bracket and play it like it's a volleyball tourney, instead of a basketball one (of course you'd have to deal with scenarios such as ODU and Vandy not having VB teams)...OR...fill it out based on how the school's basketball team advancing in the tourney, would benefit their volleyball program (here you'd have to pretend that the volleyball program would actually see any of the financial rewards from a great performance by their basketball team). However, it is a neat way to enjoy the next month of tournament coverage!

I'm rooting for Gonzaga, partly because my Mississippi Delta Fightin Artichokes didn't make the tournament this year.

We love basketball and March in particular. It is justa whole lotta fun to follow teams and players. I am still mulling about my ultimate pick but my early thought is Noah and Florida.
I like to think basketball is showing volleyball the way. Please remember volleyball has come a long long way already. Does anyone out there remember the days when there was no college volleyball for women?

One year, there was a longer show than the current one with Don Shaw called to do some preliminary bracket analysis. If I remember correctly, it was 1997 and the channel was espn2, lack of capitalization intentional

There is no motivation for ESPN to do anything more than what they are currently for a volleyball selection show. There's no money in it for them. That's why it's tucked away on ESPNNews.

There is no motivation for ESPN to do anything more than what they are currently for a volleyball selection show. There's no money in it for them. That's why it's tucked away on ESPNNews. Nearly all the stuff they do with non-revenue sports is because their contract with the NCAA requires them to do so. What they really want is the NCAA Women's BB tournament. Various Fox Sports regional networks show women's volleyball because they're required to in order to get football and men's basketball. For the most part, they do what they can and use it as filler material. I remember when Fox Sports would show a live Pac-10 match of the week in the late 90's. At this point I think they'd be making more money by selling airtime for infomercials than bargain basement prices for live volleyball. Those two hour recorded VB windows are probably much easier to budget into their timeslots and to know when they can air paid programming.

Well, part of the problem has to do with an e-mail I got at work: Just a reminder,
Because we are a national corporation and different states have different laws governing office pools and gambling, please refrain from starting or participating in any NCAA basketball pools on company premises. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.I didn't receive one of those when the Volleyball tourney started, interesting. As a side note I thought I read somewhere where just the NCAA BB Tourney is worth about 2 billion in gambling dollars.

I don' t know that there's a hug demand for a TV broadcast, but don't some schools make the selection announcement kind of a party for fans? That would be fun.
