She was an amazing payer for UCLA on serve receive and defense. I remember seeing her in the Wisconsin regional matches when she was pretty much covering 2/3rds of the court and as they say "passing bullets". She played there 4 years and never, ever got better!!! SAD! There goes Beachman again taking cheap shots at players he knows nothing about. How many times did you actually she Ashley play? As someone who saw her play a lot at UCLA, I can tell you that she was a much better player her senior year than she was during her freshman year. How about we take a look at some of the great recruits Long Beach has had in the last few years: Naomi Washington Stephanie Tokarz Quincy Verdin Heather Hetzer Natalie Uhart Makini Thompson Kristin Voyson Kelli Walsh Kelsey Young April Varner All of these were considered great athletes with a ton of "upside". Yet none of them improved a lick under the "great" Brian Gimmallaro. Even the players who managed to play, like Mariko Crum, Robin Miramontes, Erika Chidester never got any better. Then, of course, there is Alexis Crimes, who has regressed since her freshman year. Considering the poor coaching, I guess it is no surprise that Long Beach has not been past the 2nd round of the playoffs since their current players were in grade school. For every Misty May and Tayyiba Haneef, there are a dozen others who suffered Gimmillaro's abuse and never got better!

I saw Ashley play a lot and I stand by my comments that she really didn't get any better, but then again how can you when they just "roll out the balls at practice" at UCLA....furthermore the list of the former and current LBS players is an interesting one in that among all of those players, only Natalie Uhart had the HS credentials that Ashley had and out of the entire list, only 2 or 3 were HS Fab 50's......NICE TRY, but most of these kids were good players but were not hyped up HS SUPERSTARS!! Kellie Walsh was a good example of someone who was hyped up, however, but who because of a myriad of injuries played at several different schools but never successfully due to her physical limitations. I do believe that she was a Fab 50, albeit a very overrated HS player, probably due to the fact that she has a very famous older sister

But your complaint was that Ashley never got any better at UCLA. gobruins gave you a list of players at LBSU that were known to have very good "upsides" yet never got any better at LBSU.

Four of the kids that Ms. Daley referred to in her e-mail came to LBS with absolutely no HS accolades for playing VB at all....NONE OF THESE FOUR WERE RECRUITED BY ANYONE out there.....they were players that LBS identified as having significant upsides....a couple never materialized and left, and a couple got sick or injured(one became very ill) and left school....not fair to say that they were all studs out of HS who were superstars....I saw Ashley play in HS and throughout college....her improvement was very minor at best......I could say the same thing about another couple of Bruinettes who came to UCLA as great HS players but who never really got much better after 4 years of college, unlike the Cheryl Weavers, Tayyibba Haneefs and many many more who came to LBS either totally unheralded or who came with high expectations that did not match their skill levels and who prospered and got much much better.....

Very interesting final. Youngs and Branagh beat May and Walsh in the semis.
So the final is: Match 45: Nicole Branagh / Elaine Youngs (2) vs. Jennifer Boss / April Ross (11)
They have already played in round 4 with Boss/Ross winning. Tough to win twice in a row! Hope they do it. Match 22: Jennifer Boss / April Ross (11) def. Nicole Branagh / Elaine Youngs (2) 21-17, 17-21, 15-12 (1:03)

Congrats to April Ross for her first AVP championship match before falling to Young & Branagh. All those hard work in the off-season (instead of playing in the PR league) has paid off for her, and her tandem with Boss seems to make a formidable duo. Both took turns blocking at the net (according to the stats, both had 9 blocks each). Ross also registered 54 digs (#7) for 3.86 dpg and 90 kills for 0.424.
If Boss and Ross keeps doing well for the Dallas stop, I would say that they should stick together for the rest of the year and make a run for a spot in the Olympics.

Didn't someone mentioned that Boss/Ross partnership is a temporary one? After this successful tournament will Boss continue to play with Ross or she will stick to her original decision to play with Burdine?

After this successful tournament will Boss continue to play with Ross or she will stick to her original decision to play with Burdine? I hope that Boss/Ross tandem will stay throughout the season. Ross has proved that she could play very well on the beach, and that she has improved her game vastly, thanks in large part (I supposed) to training beach vball in the offseason instead of playing indoors in the PR league. Also, Burdine would need a few weeks to adjust her game back to the beach vball, so it would take longer for Boss/Burdine tandem to start the top players. Boss/Ross on the other hand, has shown that they have the tools to compete and challenge the top seeds.

Fair enough. But your complaint was that Ashley never got any better at UCLA. gobruins gave you a list of players at LBSU that were known to have very good "upsides" yet never got any better at LBSU. First of all, I am not Ali Daley's, nor anyone else's, mother. The closest I will ever be to being a mother is when someone refers to me as a "mother-f***er". I have, however, become a big fan of Ali Daley since she saw the light and figured out that if she wants a better volleyball experience, and a better education, that UCLA, is far superior to Long Beach St. Getting back to the point I was making, virtually every player that I mentioned from Long Beach was one of John Tawa's "Senior Aces", or before Tawa started chosing Senior Aces, was a Volleyball Magazine "Fab 50". So, while Beachman continually defames Andy Banachowski with his "roll out the balls" comments, the facts show that Gimmillaro is the one who doesn't develop players, while Andy Banachowski has developed players like Nana Meriwether, Katie Carter and Nellie Spicer into All-Americans.

Just in case anyone has forgotten, I would like to go on record as stating that I, too, am not Ali Dailey's mother. But I can't say I'm not anyone else's.

go bruins, I acknowledge much of your post, but to say Andy "developed" Nellie Spicer is pretty far off base, she was a two time MVP in jr ball and was developed by SPRI. I would imagine that in terms of training her, Andy just gets out of the way (as any good coach would). I am not a Gimillaro fan by any stretch, but he certainly has a stronger reputation than Andy in terms of developing players. Having said, that he also has a stronger reputation for ruining players. Andy is a strong coach for sure, but developing raw players into all-americans is not really his track record.
