Sure wish it could happen. Lots of beach players in the collegiate ranks that could compete very well with those teams. Should be a lot more fun to watch this year's than last year's version, since there are bona fide beach players in the current list.

While I think this is highly unlikely at the present time, this could have some interesting ramifications among programs. I see 2 possible scenarios from this. If atheletes are allowed to cross over from indoor to outdoor, we could see a a shift in recruiting power. Midwest and northern teams may have a disadvantage. California, Florida, and Hawaii will have some strong opportunities for players to train at any time of the year while teams like Penn State or Washington would be limited. Of course, this will depend on whether they decide to have the sport played on indoor beach courts or outdoor courts. Indoor courts level the playing field, but don’t give the “true” beach experience (at least in my opinion). If I am correct, most of the AVP plays on outdoor courts so it would seem logical for the AVCA to play on outdoor courts.
The second factor to consider is that we are seeing a lot of parity around the nation due to more talented players. However, if athletes are not allowed to cross over from indoor to outdoor, we will see those up and coming programs struggle. While this doesn’t seem to be the case according to the article, it does pose some questions. A school that may have gotten a Fab 50 player may lose this player because she chose to play for a premier college programs beach team instead of staying in the indoor game. We will begin to see a seperation between the top tier of programs more than we see now which is something the AVCA probably doesn’t want to see happen.
But again, based on this article, this seems more of a promotion to volleyball as a whole instead of trying to create a completely separate NCAA sport. This could be a fun event, but I doubt anyone would be claiming a “national title” in collegiate beach volleyball should they win this event.

Start?! This is the second year they've done this. Last year, I think it was just CSTV though...
Anyone else remember Bibi and Paula defeating Prince and Abernathy in the finals?
We'll see what happens.

Start?! This is the second year they've done this. Last year, I think it was just CSTV though... Anyone else remember Bibi and Paula defeating Prince and Abernathy in the finals? We'll see what happens. There is a major difference from last year to this year, which makes it different - better or worse, we will see. Last year, CSTV's beach programming was a reality series with players with exhausted eligibility over the course of a time period. This year, all the players still have college eligibility and affects NCAA compliance for countable competition/play dates for the school. Thus, the players really are representing the schools and not as players without eligibility to represent the school in volleyball. Further, one day of practice on site, following day is competition unlike last year's format which focused on things off the beach almost more than what was on the beach.
