What was wrong with Margaret Vakasausau and Jen Carey sharing the setting duties? One could set the middles well, one could set te outside hitters well, one could set the slide well...but NO ONE could do all All the more that they needed to share the setting duties. Both had their own strengths, and Shoji was able to use them to the team's advantage.

I think we can expect this team to do well this season, but let's not get our hopes up too high, eh? Nebraska, Stanford, Texas, and Penn St. could easily shred this Wahine teamn Yes, we do have some outstanding additions to the team, BUT, the setting will be an issue. Kamanao made things so easy for the hitters. We have a lot of new faces on the team, and these players will need to get adjusted to college ball. A solid line up (in my eyes) would be Houston and Hittle on left, Thomas and Gregory in the middle, Kaufman on the right, Lee at Libero, Kaaihue at DS, and I have yet to see Brandt set in order to judge the setting position. Mafua is good, technique-wise, but she is no where near an athlete like Kamanao. I think the following year, 2008, is going to be an awesome year, no doubt. Shoji should use this year to solidify the team's chemistry and get every player to see court time, and make a final decision on setter. I DO NOT want to be witness to another 2002 season (Vakasausau and Carey sharing setting duties - I still have not gotten over it ) Actually, a few insiders have mentioned that Mafua maybe a better athlete than Kamanao. Kamanao is the better volleyball player.

mafua is a better athlete than kanoe. not saying that kanoe isnt a good athlete; both of them are. just mafua is a lil more athletic.
as far as setting goes though, kanoe is a much much better setter. mafua is still learning how to set and as a result she'll dump more or set over on two more because her shes not as confident in her setting consistency.
i think brandt is more consistent, has a better serve, and is pretty offensive. i think brandt will start or shoji will run a 6-2, although he doesnt really like to.

If Brandt is the more consistent setter, then she should probably play the entire time. I'm sure Shoji can figure out another way to get the other setter in. Like Thurlby. Somebody mentioned that Mafua has good defensive skills.
By the way, how is Brandt's blocking? Looking at her stats last year, she averaged well less than half a block per game.

Thank you for reminding me about Houston's slide. I have not seen anyone in the country run a backrow slide or step-out ever. Seeing Hawaii run that slide last year was something new and exciting. But I think only players like Houston can perfect it because of their amazing jumping abilities. I agree but didn't stanford use Ogonna Nnamani for slides as well??? Back or front I can't remember specifically? No Ogonna didn't hit a slide. It was either on the left or backrow.
