I thought it was somewhat realistic starting point, surprisingly.
I have two questions: 1) Why is Arizona so high and 2) (sorry J.C.), but what on earth has convinced someone to vote for G-Tech in the preseason poll?

Getting some votes doesn't mean anyone is on the "outsets" of getting ranked. Michigan, for instance, would need some pretty huge wins to make the top 25.

Wow.....looking at the preseason poll and then Hawaii's schedule, I believe the only ranked teams Hawaii will play will be UCLA,NEBRASKA, and UC Santa Barbara. Should I be a little concerned? I don't think so but I guess we will see. Hawaii's playing UCSB? Okay, I just checked . . . you must have meant Santa Clara. Yeah sorry I mean't Santa Clara.

Uhm....................I'm just sitting here, scratching my head. NMSU will move up as other teams above them fall -- especially if they have impressive showings against Texas and Nebraska.

I don't think so but I guess we will see. Depends on how they do. If they could pull off two out of three, then that would bode well, I would think. OTOH, if they were to lose all three, then that could be cause for concern, and you have to start hoping that the other good-but-unranked teams on the schedule step up. A win just over SC would but things in a lot of flux, and you'd have to wait and see.

why would USC be too high.. they return everyone and another gun in the middle. plus a highly rated outside hitter who behind Klineman was the next best OH in the JNT

I don't think so but I guess we will see. Well, the Wahine do play 2 Top 5 teams ... but actually even if there is only one other team RANKED, the Wahine play a bunch of other teams on the "also receiving votes" ... Louisville #26, NMSU #28 (atleast twice), Colorado State #30, Michigan #34, and Wichita St. #42. So although the schedule doesn't feature as many ranked teams as the last two seasons, there are definitely a lot of quality teams on the schedule. Besides, its a preseason poll, I can guarentee you more than half of the "also receiving votes" teams will be ranked sooner or later and all the teams after #15 could also drop out of the poll. Time will tell.

Losses by teams above them will start to drop points from those teams down to the teams that are not ranked. If any team ranked from 20-25 loses to a non-ranked team, points will move from them to the lower teams and someone like Louisville can be ranked as soon as the next poll. Michigan is a stretch, however, with the Big 10, they have a lot of opportunities to get some strong wins to push up their RPI and ranking.

Oh, I know - that was just my initial reaction after seeing the poll. I know we've got to prove ourselves this year after losing 3 amazing players. We got a lot of new talent onboard this year that no one's seen work together yet. I can handle 28th - at least for now The proof, as they say, is in the pudding or the season - however ya wanna look at it!

Should not be in top 20- Utah, Ohio
Should be in "receiving votes"- Ohio, Utah
Duke should hover around 18 all season, maybe as high as 15 at some point. Will probably go undefeated in the ACC.
GT should not be getting votes.
Kentucky deserves the votes they recieved.

But have you looked at Michigan's schedule, which is pretty ambitious? They could easily lose two of their first three matches (Hawaii, CSU) and, when they get to the Big Ten season, two of their first four conference matches (Wisconsin, Minnesota).

Their first tournament is ambitious but not impossible. CSU and Hawaii will be tough but not impossible. The only challenge for the next 3 weeks will be GT, who is ranked below them at this point. And the conference probably puts together the conference schedule, so they have no control over who they see first. Again, if they win the matches they are supposed to win, they could be ranked in the top 25. But it is going to be harder for them to get ranked as opposed to Louisville and NMSU.

I think GT is a good pick. Nice core returning, + some good recruiting classes. I'd keep an eye on them, myself.
